🚨 BRYAN KOHBERGER HEADING BACK TO COURT SOONER THAN EXPECTED — NEW HEARING SET FOR OCTOBER 15
Bryan Kohberger is set to return to court on October 15 as his legal team seeks to remove Judge Steven Hippler from overseeing his post-conviction proceedings. The hearing comes sooner than the status conference and evidentiary hearing that had previously been scheduled for June 2027.
Kohberger pleaded guilty in July 2025 to four counts of first-degree murder and a burglary charge in connection with the deaths of four University of Idaho students. Under the plea agreement, prosecutors agreed not to seek a death sentence, and he was sentenced to four consecutive life terms without parole, plus 10 years for burglary.
In a post-conviction peтιтion filed this year, Kohberger alleges that his defense attorneys provided ineffective ᴀssistance and that his guilty plea was not entered knowingly and voluntarily. He claims his attorneys withheld or failed to adequately review potentially useful evidence and that promises and alleged pressure influenced his decision to accept the plea.
His current attorneys are also challenging Judge Hippler’s continued involvement in the case. They argue that statements made during the 2025 sentencing and the judge’s handling of earlier proceedings raise questions about whether he can remain impartial while considering Kohberger’s post-conviction claims.
The October 15 hearing, however, will not itself determine whether Kohberger receives a new trial. The immediate issue is whether Judge Hippler should be disqualified. His broader request to withdraw his guilty plea remains part of the separate post-conviction process.
If a court eventually allows Kohberger to withdraw his plea and the case proceeds to a new trial, prosecutors could once again seek the death penalty, because that possibility was removed under the original plea agreement. For now, there has been no ruling overturning his convictions or life sentences.
