🚨 15-Year-Old Will Roberts Undergoes Complex Rotationplasty: Doctors Rotate His Legs to Create New Knee Joints Despite Cancer Affecting Both Legs ⚡
A surgery filled with hope and tears recently took place at the MD Anderson Cancer Center.
At 15 years old, Will Roberts faced an incredibly difficult decision: bone cancer (osteosarcoma) had affected both legs. Doctors were forced to perform a rotationplasty – an extremely complex and rare procedure – to remove the upper part of the leg above the knee and rotate the lower part to create new knee joints, allowing him to wear prosthetic legs and move in the future.

The surgery lasted many hours. Doctors removed the upper part of Will’s left leg above the knee, then rotated the lower leg 180 degrees and reattached it so that the ankle could function as a new knee joint. This was the chosen method to give Will the best chance of mobility after the cancer had spread and destroyed the bone.

The moment the entire operating room fell silent
According to the medical team, when the surgery ended, the entire treatment room fell into an emotional silence. No one cheered. Everyone quietly monitored the vital signs and waited for Will to wake up. This was a pivotal surgery – it saved his life and offered hope for his future mobility.

Will’s father, Jason Roberts, shared a short but touching message immediately after the surgery:

“The surgery went exactly as the doctors hoped. Will still has a wonderful future ahead thanks to his resilient spirit.”
