Two Texas brothers died just hours apart after they were allegedly sH๏τ by a neighbor in what authorities described as an apparently unprovoked attack outside their family home in San Antonio.

Dravyn Quiroz, 20, and his 11-year-old brother, Maliki Perales, were caught in the shooting last Tuesday as Quiroz was reportedly backing a car into the family’s driveway. Maliki had stepped outside shortly before the gunfire began.

According to investigators, Daniel Antonio Perez, 40, allegedly opened fire after one of the brothers noticed a man watching them. Authorities said there had been no known dispute or previous conflict between the families.

Their father, Andrew Perales, recalled hearing several loud pops before his wife began screaming.

“I got my gun, came down,” he told reporters.

As the family rushed outside, Andrew said he encountered one of his sons on the ground and saw the alleged gunman across the street.

Maliki, who was preparing to begin middle school, was seriously injured and was carried by his father to a nearby Dollar General store, roughly a quarter of a mile away, before being taken to a hospital. He died shortly before 8:50 p.m., around 80 minutes after the shooting. 🕯️

Dravyn died approximately 12 hours later.

Authorities said Perez attempted to leave the area after the shooting but was arrested about 10 minutes later. He has been charged with capital murder and aggravated ᴀssault with a ᴅᴇᴀᴅly weapon. If convicted of capital murder, he could face the death penalty under Texas law.

Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar described the family as innocent victims who appeared to have been targeted without any apparent provocation.

“Unbeknownst to them, they had what I would believe and categorize as a ticking time bomb right across the street from them,” Salazar said.

Investigators also said Perez’s family had previously witnessed mental health episodes but had not reported them to authorities. According to Salazar, Perez had experienced depression and reportedly believed he was seeing things that were not there.

Authorities later recovered the alleged weapon from a nearby drainage culvert.

Salazar also said Perez allegedly fired toward two other siblings who were near the family’s front door, but fortunately missed them. 💔

As the investigation continues, Andrew remembers his sons not for the violence that took them, but for the values he worked to instill in them.

“I raised them right. They had good morals. They had good values,” he said.

He described both brothers as “fighters.”

Dravyn had faced significant health challenges in the months before his death, including surgeries related to pancreaтιтis and diabetic ketoacidosis. His father remembered him as a young man simply trying to rebuild his life.

“Before the DKA … he was just a normal kid trying to get his life together,” Perales said.

Hundreds of people later gathered for a vigil to honor the brothers, surrounding their grieving family with support and remembrance. 🕊️❤️

For those who loved Dravyn and Maliki, their lives will be remembered as far more than the tragedy that ended them — they were brothers, sons and beloved members of a family now facing an unimaginable loss.
