⚠️ HE WAS ONLY 8 MONTHS OLD — AND THE LAST HOURS OF HIS LIFE ENDED IN A TRAGEDY THAT NO CHILD SHOULD EVER HAVE TO ENDURE. 💔

On September 7, 2013, baby Leelan Crain was found unresponsive in his crib in Salem, Indiana.

He was just eight months old.

Leelan was rushed to a local hospital before being airlifted to Kosair Children’s Hospital in Louisville, where doctors fought to save his life. But the injuries were too severe.

At 1:41 a.m. on September 8, Leelan was pronounced ᴅᴇᴀᴅ.

An autopsy determined that the infant died from blunt-force trauma to the head. Investigators found that he had suffered 29 injuries, including 20 to his head.

The case initially involved a claim that Leelan had fallen from his crib.

But that explanation did not hold.

According to testimony presented in court, a babysitter said Jamie James Lykins, Leelan’s mother’s boyfriend, admitted that he had hurt the baby because the infant was crying. The testimony said Lykins then turned up the music in an attempt to drown out Leelan’s cries.

It is a detail that remains especially heartbreaking because crying was one of the only ways an eight-month-old baby could communicate that something was wrong.

Leelan could not run away.

He could not defend himself.

He could not call someone for help.

He was completely dependent on the adults around him for protection.

Lykins ultimately pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 50 years in prison. Leelan’s mother, Casey Crain, was also convicted of neglect of a dependent resulting in d***h.

The legal consequences could never undo what happened to Leelan.

They could never give his family another chance to hold him, hear his laugh or watch him grow.

But remembering him matters.

Stories like Leelan’s are painful because they force us to confront how vulnerable infants are and how completely they rely on adults to keep them safe. A baby’s cries should be answered with comfort, not punishment. A child who cannot protect himself deserves adults who will protect him without hesitation.

Leelan’s life was tragically short.

He never got to take his first steps, say his first words, start school or discover the person he might have become.

He was here for only eight months.

Yet he was loved, he mattered, and his life deserves to be remembered beyond the circumstances of his death.

Today, the most important thing is not to let his name disappear beneath the details of a heartbreaking case.
