Country music artist Rory Feek has shared an emotional account of the frightening medical emergency that unfolded just two weeks after his 12-year-old daughter, Indiana, underwent open-heart surgery.

In a heartfelt post, Feek described how what initially appeared to be a routine illness quickly became a race against time, leaving both he and his wife, Rebecca, fearing they might lose their daughter.

Indiana, who was born with a congenital heart defect known as a ventricular septal defect and also has Down syndrome, had recently undergone corrective heart surgery. The family believed they were entering the recovery phase when unexpected symptoms suddenly appeared.

According to Feek, Indiana first complained of a headache before becoming ill during the night. At first, her parents suspected she had picked up a common stomach virus.

Within a short time, however, her condition changed dramatically.

Recognizing that something was seriously wrong, the family called emergency services. Indiana was taken to a hospital in Waco, Texas, where doctors quickly determined she needed specialized pediatric cardiac care unavailable at that location.

She was transported by helicopter to Dell Children’s Medical Center in Austin while Rory followed behind by road, unable to accompany her due to limited space on the aircraft.

After further evaluation, specialists discovered a significant buildup of fluid surrounding Indiana’s heart. The excess fluid was preventing her heart from pumping effectively, reducing oxygen circulation throughout her body and creating a rapidly worsening medical emergency.

Doctors explained that the complication was not caused by anything the family had done. Instead, it can occasionally develop after heart surgery when postoperative inflammation leads to fluid accumulating around the heart.

Medical teams immediately prepared Indiana for another operation.

During the procedure, surgeons removed approximately 610 cubic centimeters of fluid, relieving the pressure surrounding her heart. Imaging later showed the swelling had enlarged to nearly twice its normal size before treatment.

The results were immediate and encouraging.

Feek shared that doctors expect Indiana to make a full recovery and do not anticipate ongoing complications related to this episode. As her condition improved, the color returned not only to Indiana’s face but also, as Feek lovingly described, to the faces of her worried parents.

The latest medical challenge comes after years of carefully monitoring Indiana’s congenital heart condition. Shortly after her birth in 2014, specialists diagnosed the heart defect, and doctors had continued following her progress throughout childhood before recommending corrective surgery.
