📰🌊 14-Year-Old Girl Honored for Extraordinary Courage After Risking Her Life to Help Teen in River Rescue

A 14-year-old girl from England is being praised for an incredible act of bravery after she risked her own safety while trying to save another teenager during a river emergency.

In May 2025, Shelby Quigley was taking part in her Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Expedition near the River Wyre in Lancashire when she noticed something was wrong.

According to reports, 15-year-old Lotus Bowker entered the fast-moving river with friends and began struggling in the water. When Shelby saw him disappear beneath the surface, she immediately reacted.

Without waiting for anyone else, Shelby removed her heavy walking boots and outer clothing before entering the river herself.

🌊 The conditions were extremely challenging. The water was deep, the current was strong, and visibility was poor. Shelby could not immediately see where Lotus had gone.

But she refused to give up.

She took a breath, went beneath the surface, and searched through the water until she found Lotus near the riverbed. After coming back up for air, she returned into the water again, determined to bring him back toward safety.

At one point, Shelby was struggling to stay above the surface herself while trying to support Lotus. Despite the danger around her, she continued holding on until another person entered the river and helped bring him to shore.

Emergency responders arrived and Lotus was taken for medical care. He was transported to Royal Preston Hospital before later being transferred to Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital.

Sadly, Lotus pᴀssed away the following day.

💔 Although Shelby could not change the final outcome, her actions gave Lotus every possible chance and demonstrated remarkable courage.

Her bravery has since been recognized with the Royal Humane Society Silver Medal, one of the United Kingdom’s most respected civilian bravery awards.

The honor recognizes individuals who place themselves in serious danger while attempting to help another person.

Andrew Chapman, Secretary of the Royal Humane Society, praised Shelby’s actions, saying that many people would have struggled to continue in such frightening circumstances.

He highlighted the calmness and determination she showed during the rescue attempt.
