💙 THE BOY ONCE CALLED “MASK BOY” — A STORY OF COURAGE, FAMILY LOVE, AND ACCEPTANCE
Born in Hunan, China, in 2009, Zhao Huikang, affectionately known as Kang Kang, captured worldwide attention because of an extremely rare facial condition called a transverse facial cleft.
His condition affected not only the soft tissues of his face but also parts of the underlying facial structure, making treatment especially complicated. For his farming family, the medical costs seemed overwhelming, but they refused to give up on their son.
After people around the country learned about Kang Kang’s story, donations helped his family pursue treatment. In 2010, he underwent two major reconstructive procedures at a military hospital in Changsha, with reports at the time describing the operations as successful. ❤️
His mother, Yi Lianxi, later spoke about the shock she experienced when she first saw her newborn son. What followed was an even more difficult journey as the family faced unwanted attention and hurtful reactions from strangers.
Yet through it all, his family stood beside him.
Doctors also emphasized that Kang Kang was still growing, meaning his long-term development could not immediately be predicted. Later public reports provided little reliable information about his life as he grew older.
His story is ultimately about more than a rare medical condition. It is about a child whose family chose love and protection when others chose judgment.
