Born in Hunan, China, in 2009, Zhao Huikang, affectionately known as Kang Kang, captured worldwide attention because of an extremely rare facial condition called a transverse facial cleft.
His condition affected not only the soft tissues of his face but also parts of the underlying facial structure, making treatment especially complicated. For his farming family, the medical costs seemed overwhelming, but they refused to give up on their son.
