đź’™ HE THOUGHT IT WAS THE FLU. TEN DAYS LATER, ALEX LEWIS HAD LOST BOTH LEGS AND AN ARM.

In November 2013, Alex Lewis was living in Hampshire, England, with his partner Lucy and their young son when what initially seemed like a simple illness rapidly became life-threatening.
His condition deteriorated so quickly that he was rushed to hospital with severe sepsis and toxic shock syndrome caused by Group A Streptococcus. Doctors reportedly gave him only around a 1% chance of survival.
Somehow, Alex survived.

But the infection had caused devastating tissue damage. Both of his legs were amputated above the knee, along with his left arm, while surgeons also carried out extensive reconstruction involving his face and mouth. đź’”
Months later, another complication emerged when his remaining arm fractured and doctors discovered a persistent infection. It ultimately had to be amputated as well, leaving Alex a quadruple amputee.
Life could never simply return to the way it had been.
Instead, Alex began building something new.
He learned to use adaptive equipment, worked alongside engineers developing prosthetic technology and gradually took on physical challenges that once seemed unimaginable.
His achievements have included kayaking around southern Greenland, crossing part of the Namib Desert on a mobility scooter and rowing hundreds of miles around England’s coastline. 🌍
He also became an advocate for improving access to prosthetics and á´€ssistive technology for other amputees.
Before his illness, Alex has described himself as someone who lacked direction. After surviving an experience that changed almost every part of his physical life, he discovered a determination to keep moving forward. ❤️
His story isn’t about getting his old life back.
It’s about discovering that even after everything changes, there can still be a next chapter worth fighting for.
If almost everything about your physical life suddenly changed, where would you find the strength to begin again?
