What began as what seemed like an ordinary viral illness changed Beckett’s life in a matter of days. At just 22 months old, he became seriously ill and was diagnosed with acute necrotizing encephalopathy (ANE), a rare condition involving inflammation and disruption of brain function that can occur after a viral infection.

Beckett’s family soon found themselves facing a terrifying reality. He became unresponsive and lost many abilities he had already developed, including movement, speech and motor skills. He required intensive medical care followed by rehabilitation to begin rebuilding those abilities.

But at age four, another episode of ANE brought an even greater setback. This time, Beckett was initially unable to walk, communicate or feed himself independently. He spent nine weeks in inpatient rehabilitation, where therapists helped him relearn basic movements and everyday skills.

The progress that followed was extraordinary.

Through months of rehabilitation, Beckett gradually regained strength and coordination. He worked on walking, communication, feeding and other everyday movements, celebrating tiny victories that once might have seemed completely ordinary.

Today, his family continues to celebrate every improvement. Beckett has progressed to walking independently and is even able to run without a mobility aid, while continuing therapy to build his strength, endurance and communication skills.

For his parents, watching him take those steps means something very different now.

A walk across the room is no longer just a walk. A word is no longer just a word. Each new ability represents months of determination, therapy and an extraordinary little boy refusing to stop moving forward.

Beckett’s journey is a reminder that sometimes the biggest victories begin with the smallest steps. 💙🦋
