When Zakary entered the world, his family was faced with a diagnosis they had never imagined. He was born with encephalocele, a rare congenital condition that caused a large sac containing brain tissue to develop over much of his face, extending from his forehead to his upper lip.

His mother, Valeka Riegel, recalls that in those first moments after birth, she could see only her baby’s tiny mouth. She wondered if she would ever be able to look into her son’s eyes, while doctors worked quickly to ᴀssess his condition and determine the best course of treatment.

Zakary was immediately placed in the care of specialists at Cincinnati Children’s, where a multidisciplinary team of 22 medical experts developed a treatment plan tailored to his complex needs. He spent more than four months in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), receiving around-the-clock care while his family held onto hope.

When the time was right, surgeons performed a remarkable nine-hour operation to remove the encephalocele, repair his skull, and reconstruct his face. The highly complex procedure marked a major milestone in Zakary’s journey and reflected the dedication and expertise of the medical team caring for him.

Although his road to recovery continues, Zakary’s story has become one of hope, resilience, and the extraordinary possibilities of modern medicine. Supported by his family and healthcare team, he continues to inspire people around the world with every step forward.
