At just 18 months old, Freya Gibbs has already shown incredible strength and resilience.

Born with bilateral tibial hemimelia—one of the rarest congenital lower-limb conditions, affecting approximately one in a million babies—Freya recently underwent a double below-the-knee amputation, a decision her parents hope will give her the best opportunity for an active and independent future.

Her parents, Danielle and Michael Gibbs, from Wales, said they had no idea their daughter had the condition until two weeks after she was born in September 2017.

At first, doctors believed Freya’s feet were simply positioned unusually, but further examinations revealed a much rarer diagnosis. Bilateral tibial hemimelia is a condition in which the tibia, the main bone of the lower leg, is either missing or severely underdeveloped. Many children with the condition require complex surgical treatment.

After speaking with specialists, Freya’s parents faced an incredibly difficult decision. They were told that attempting to reconstruct her legs would likely involve years of multiple surgeries, with no guarantee of success and the possibility that amputation could still be necessary later.

Wanting to give their daughter the greatest chance at a happy, active childhood, they chose early amputation.

In February, Freya underwent successful surgery at Cardiff Children’s Hospital, returning home the very same day to begin her recovery.

Her next milestone will be receiving her first pair of prosthetic legs. With rehabilitation and support, her family hopes she will soon be able to walk, run, play, and explore the world alongside other children her age.

Danielle believes her daughter will grow up seeing her prosthetic legs as simply part of who she is.

Children, she says, have an amazing ability to adapt, and she is confident that Freya’s determination will help her overcome every challenge that lies ahead.
