For most babies, reaching for a favorite toy is something that comes naturally. For little Shawn, born without fully developed hands and feet due to amniotic band syndrome, discovering new ways to play has been a journey of creativity, determination, and love. Yet through it all, his joyful spirit has never faded.

🧸 With the constant support of his family, Shawn is learning to explore the world on his own terms. Recently, a simple set of wrist rattles gave him the opportunity to enjoy toys independently for the first time. For his parents, watching him discover this new ability was an unforgettable moment.

👶 Shawn Keller was born at 36 weeks. His mother, Dezeray, first learned about his condition during her 20-week anatomy scan. Doctors diagnosed him with amniotic band syndrome, a condition that can restrict the development of parts of the limbs before birth.

🦿 Today, Shawn receives care from several teams at Riley Children’s Health, including specialists in orthopedics, developmental pediatrics, and pulmonology. He uses prosthetic legs, crawls, practices shifting his weight as he prepares for walking, and continues reaching developmental milestones at his own pace.

📖 Dezeray also shares their family’s journey through the Facebook page Tadpole Tales, hoping that greater visibility can encourage understanding and acceptance. She believes that the more people see Shawn, the more comfortable they will become with talking about differences and recognizing the individuality of children like him.
