When Maddicyn Brokenshire and her husband, Daniel, discovered they were expecting their first child, they were filled with excitement and dreams for the future. 👶💙

But their joy soon turned into uncertainty.

Early in the pregnancy, Maddicyn was diagnosed with a subchorionic hemorrhage, a type of bleeding that can occur between the uterine wall and the gestational sac. Although it can sometimes resolve on its own, the diagnosis left the couple anxious about their unborn baby. 💔

Then came the 20-week anatomy scan.

Doctors discovered amniotic bands—thin strands of tissue that can, in rare cases, wrap around a developing baby and restrict growth or damage body parts.

At first, doctors believed the bands were simply floating and unlikely to cause problems.

But Maddicyn, who had previously worked as a nurse, couldn’t shake the feeling that something wasn’t right.

She began researching Amniotic Band Syndrome (ABS) and became increasingly concerned. Her instincts would soon prove right. 💙

At 33 weeks, after being transferred to a larger hospital in Christchurch, specialists discovered that the bands had тιԍнтened around her baby.

There was an indentation across the bridge of his nose, and his right eye socket was significantly smaller than the left.

The family still had no idea how severe the damage would ultimately be.

Then, just one week later, Maddicyn’s water broke.

Doctors rushed to deliver the baby by emergency C-section.

Their son, Ollyver, was born without breathing.

For his parents, those moments felt endless as doctors worked desperately to resuscitate him. Thankfully, he eventually responded. 🙏💙

But surviving birth was only the beginning.

The amniotic bands had already caused significant damage before he entered the world.

Ollyver was born with a large open wound on the back of his scalp ᴀssociated with Aplasia Cutis Congenita (ACC), a rare condition in which areas of skin fail to develop before birth.

His eyelids were also affected and never fully formed.

He is completely blind in his right eye and may eventually need a prosthetic eye as he grows. 💔

Yet despite everything, Ollyver has continued to amaze his family.

At just eight months old, he has already undergone multiple surgeries to release remaining amniotic bands and reconstruct his eyelids. Some procedures haven’t produced the hoped-for results, but his doctors continue working to improve his eye function as he grows. 🏥✨

And then there is his development.

Despite all he has endured, Ollyver’s brain was not affected by the condition.

Today, he is reaching—and even surpᴀssing—many developmental milestones expected for his age. He crawls, explores, and seems determined to investigate everything around him. 🥹💙

His vision loss may create challenges with balance and depth perception, but his family has already connected with specialists and support services to help him navigate those challenges.

For Maddicyn, watching her son grow stronger is incredibly emotional.

She remembers the uncertainty of pregnancy.

The terrifying discoveries.

The emergency delivery.

The surgeries.

And all the moments when she didn’t know what the future would hold.

Yet Ollyver continues moving forward. 🌟
