When identical twins Aniyah and Sophia entered the world, their parents were prepared for the joy of welcoming two babies.

But Aniyah’s condition quickly turned their happiness into a fight for her life. 👶👶💔

Aniyah was born with encephalocele, a rare congenital condition in which brain tissue and its surrounding membranes protrude through an opening in the skull.

In her case, doctors found that the vast majority of the tissue outside her skull was not viable.

When Aniyah was just one day old, surgeons removed the damaged tissue in an attempt to give her the best possible chance of survival. 🏥

Her parents, Charlotte Youds and Will Todd, were only 20 years old.

They were told that their tiny daughter was unlikely to survive.

Eventually, medical teams reached a heartbreaking point where they believed there was nothing more they could do.

The machines supporting Aniyah were turned off, and her parents were given the opportunity to hold their baby and say goodbye.

Charlotte later recalled how devastating those moments were.

“We were both broken.”
She and Will held their daughter close, talked to her, and made her a promise:

And somehow, Aniyah did.

Instead of saying goodbye, her parents witnessed something they had never expected.

Now four months old, Aniyah is growing alongside her twin sister, Sophia.

Her journey is still closely monitored by specialists, and she continues to attend regular medical appointments following her surgery.

Doctors know that the brain tissue remaining inside her skull developed abnormally, but they cannot yet predict exactly how this will affect her future.

For her parents, that uncertainty can be frightening.

But her doctors have given them an important piece of advice:

Aniyah can breathe independently.

She doesn’t require a feeding tube.

She needs very little medication.

“She’s so alert, she smiles and laughs, and she loves music. She’ll have a little dance.”
