When twin sisters Mary Ellen and Kahleesi were growing safely in the womb, their parents dreamed of bringing two healthy baby girls home.

But a routine 20-week scan changed everything. Doctors discovered that while Kahleesi’s heart appeared healthy, Mary Ellen had a complex congenital heart condition, along with a curved spine and only one kidney.

Her parents soon learned that their tiny daughter would need intensive medical care and multiple heart surgeries from the very beginning of her life. 💗

The twins were born on December 8, and for a brief time, Mary Ellen was strong enough to go home with her family. Those precious days gave her parents memories they will always treasure.

But during a follow-up cardiology appointment, everything suddenly changed. Mary Ellen became critically ill and was rushed into emergency open-heart surgery that same night.

Since January 5, she has remained at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, facing one difficult challenge after another.

Mary Ellen was born with several complex heart conditions, including Double Outlet Right Ventricle (DORV), Atrioventricular Septal Defect (AVSD), and pulmonary stenosis. Her treatment has included multiple procedures, setbacks and periods of extreme uncertainty.

Through it all, her mother has remained by her side. ❤️

In a deeply emotional letter to her daughter, she reflected on how much their lives had changed since Mary Ellen’s diagnosis.

“I didn’t know what DORV, AVSD, and pulmonary stenosis meant,” she wrote. “I didn’t know what congenital heart disease was or the world we were about to enter.”

Yet Mary Ellen has taught her mother something equally powerful: strength.

“Being a heart mom has given me the strength I didn’t know I even had.”

Her greatest wish for her daughter is simple and beautiful:

“I hope you get to grow up and become everything you want to be and more.” 🌸

Despite everything she has endured, Mary Ellen continues to fight. Her story has also inspired her family to raise awareness about congenital heart disease and the countless children who face complex medical journeys from the moment they are born.

To her mother, Mary Ellen will always be more than a diagnosis.
