NEW YORK CITY — Two 24-year-old friends and recent Rutgers University graduates lost their lives in a heartbreaking subway tragedy in Manhattan early Sunday morning.

Navam Kaul and Malaika Chitre d*ed after being struck by a southbound No. 4 train at the Spring Street subway station around 3:15 a.m. on Sept. 13, 2026.

According to investigators, Navam somehow ended up on the subway tracks.

When Malaika realized her friend was in danger, authorities say she climbed down onto the tracks in an attempt to help him.

Surveillance footage reportedly showed the two friends on the tracks shortly before the train entered the station.

Officials said the train operator attempted to activate emergency braking after seeing them, but there was not enough distance to stop in time.

The train struck both individuals.

They were pronounced d*ad at the scene.

Investigators are still working to determine exactly why the pair ended up on the tracks and why they remained there as the train approached. Authorities are reportedly examining whether confusion, disorientation or possible intoxication may have played a role.

Officials have said there was no suicide note or known indication that either person intentionally meant to harm themselves.

For their families and friends, however, the tragedy is about much more than the unanswered questions surrounding that final moment.

Navam and Malaika were young adults who had recently graduated from Rutgers University in 2024 and were beginning their professional lives.

Malaika Chitre, from Dayton, New Jersey, had earned a science degree and was working as an operations specialist at Acadia Pharmaceuticals. She was remembered as hardworking and intelligent, with a promising future ahead of her.

Navam Kaul, from Sayreville, New Jersey, was of Nepalese heritage and had begun working as a financial data analyst at Bloomberg.

At just 24, both had spent years building toward futures that should have included careers, relationships, birthdays and countless ordinary moments still to come.

Instead, their families are now left mourning two lives that ended in a matter of seconds.

One of the most heartbreaking details is Malaika’s decision to go toward her friend when she saw him in danger.

Rather than walking away, investigators say she climbed onto the tracks in an attempt to help Navam get back to safety.

Whatever led to the tragedy, that instinct to help someone she cared about remains part of how many people will remember her.

The investigation continues, and authorities are still working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the accident.

For those who loved Navam and Malaika, though, the unanswered questions cannot change the greatest loss: two young people who had only just begun their adult lives are gone.
