Caroline Melissa Davenport-Rios, a 39-year-old mother from Perris, California, was found ᴅᴇᴀᴅ in a ditch alongside Highway 74 near Hemet on August 12. Her body may have remained there for several days before it was discovered.

Authorities with the California Highway Patrol (CHP) are investigating her death as a possible hit-and-run, believing the incident may have occurred sometime between August 7 and August 10.

But Caroline’s family has questions.

Her sister, Jennifer Davenport-Rios, said Caroline would not normally have been walking along that remote stretch of highway, which is roughly eight miles from her home.

Even more puzzling, the family says Caroline’s final phone location did not match the area where her body and cellphone were eventually found. Her sister also recalled sending Caroline a text around 10:30 or 11 p.m. several days before the discovery, and the family says the message appeared to have been read. 💔

For her loved ones, the circumstances have left more questions than answers.

And if she was struck by a vehicle, why did the driver leave without stopping? 😔

Her nephew, Jorge Ruiz, questioned why she was found in an isolated area with relatively little camera coverage. The family is urging anyone who may have seen something unusual — or who has dashcam or surveillance footage from the area between August 7 and 10 — to come forward.

Caroline leaves behind two teenage children, who now have to face the unimaginable loss of their mother. Her family is raising money to help support them while they wait for answers. 🕊️💔

The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have not established publicly that Caroline’s death was a homicide.

For a grieving family, however, one thing is clear:

They want to know what happened to Caroline — and they want whoever knows the truth to finally speak. 💙🕊️
