When Anna Martin discovered she was pregnant, she imagined the months ahead would be filled with excitement, anticipation and the simple joy of preparing to welcome another baby. 🤰💗

She had no idea that an illness during those early weeks of pregnancy would eventually change her daughter’s life forever.

At just five weeks pregnant, Anna’s older daughter, Josephine, came home after being exposed to chickenpox.

Soon afterward, Anna developed a fever and flu-like symptoms.

She knew she had been exposed.

She knew she was pregnant.

So she sought medical help.

But according to Anna, she was repeatedly reᴀssured that her symptoms were likely “just a virus.” 🩺

🥺 SHE KEPT GOING BACK FOR HELP
Anna says she visited her GP and A&E multiple times while pregnant because her symptoms weren’t improving.

Each time, she says, her concerns were dismissed.

Eventually, she was diagnosed with chickenpox after visiting A&E.

But according to her account, antiviral treatment was not provided until a later hospital visit. 💔🏥

By then, Anna feared the infection had already affected her unborn baby.

She could never have imagined how dramatically the illness would shape the life of the little girl she was carrying.

👶 THEN GENEVIEVE WAS BORN
In November, Anna gave birth to Genevieve.

And the family discovered that their daughter had been born with congenital varicella syndrome, a rare condition that can occur when a pregnant woman contracts chickenpox during pregnancy. 🧬💔

Genevieve was born with a shorter right leg and only three toes on her right foot.

The diagnosis brought a wave of uncertainty.

Her parents suddenly had to think about challenges they had never expected their child to face.

There were questions about mobility.

Questions about her development.

🦶 AT JUST 14 MONTHS, SHE FACED A LIFE-CHANGING DECISION
As Genevieve grew, the differences in her right leg and foot continued to affect her.

Eventually, at just 14 months old, her parents made the incredibly difficult decision to have her right foot amputated. 💔🦶

It was not a decision any parent would ever want to make.

But they hoped it would give their daughter a better opportunity to move and live as comfortably as possible.

For Anna and her fiancé, Iain, it meant accepting that their little girl’s childhood would look different from what they had originally imagined.

Despite everything she has experienced, Genevieve is now three years old and continuing to grow. 💗👧

Her mother says she experiences fatigue, discomfort and spasms, particularly at night.

But there is something that shines through all of those challenges:

She remains mobile in moderation and continues discovering the world around her.

Her condition may have changed some of the things she can do.

But it has not taken away her personality.

It has not taken away her happiness.

🥺 MORE CHALLENGES MAY LIE AHEAD
Because of congenital varicella syndrome, Genevieve is also at increased risk of other complications, including learning difficulties and hearing or vision problems, as well as additional limb differences. 🩺

Her family knows that the journey may not become easier simply because she is growing older.

There may be more appointments.

More ᴀssessments.

More uncertainty.

But they are taking everything one day at a time. 🌱💗

And their focus remains on helping Genevieve live the fullest life possible.

💔 HER MOTHER WANTS OTHER PARENTS TO KNOW
Anna has now spoken publicly about her experience and launched a peтιтion calling for greater awareness and stronger protections for pregnant women who are exposed to chickenpox.

Her message isn’t simply about her own family.

She wants other expectant mothers to understand that chickenpox during pregnancy can be serious and that concerns about exposure should be taken seriously. ⚠️🤰
