🎥💔 Bus Surveillance Became Key Evidence After Milwaukee Teen’s Death

MILWAUKEE — A Milwaukee teenager has been sentenced to 12 years in prison after being convicted in the 2025 death of his 15-year-old girlfriend, Azoria Jones, a case that ultimately turned on surveillance footage, witness accounts and conflicting explanations about what happened that night.

Javier Smith, now 17, was prosecuted as an adult and convicted of second-degree reckless homicide. A judge also ordered him to serve six years of extended supervision after completing his prison sentence.

The incident happened in September 2025 near 76th Street and Silver Spring Drive, shortly after 10:20 p.m.

According to prosecutors, witnesses reported hearing a single gunsH๏τ and later saw Azoria on a sidewalk with serious injuries. Several people told police they observed a male leaving the area shortly afterward.

Investigators quickly began reconstructing the events leading up to the shooting.

A major piece of evidence came from surveillance footage recorded by a Milwaukee County Transit System bus traveling through the area. Prosecutors said the video captured important moments surrounding the incident and contradicted parts of Smith’s original explanation to police.

Initially, Smith reportedly denied being responsible for the shooting. Investigators said he later changed his account and acknowledged that he had been holding the firearm when it discharged.

According to the criminal complaint, Smith told detectives that he believed someone in a pᴀssing vehicle was preparing to fire. He said he attempted to move the firearm beneath his arm when it unexpectedly discharged.

However, prosecutors said the surveillance footage did not show the vehicle Smith had described.

The investigation also focused on what happened immediately afterward.

Police said Smith ran to his grandmother’s home following the shooting and initially told relatives that another person had fired the sH๏τ. Authorities later located him at his aunt’s residence, where he was arrested two days after the incident.

During questioning, investigators said Smith admitted disposing of the firearm involved. Detectives also reported that he provided conflicting accounts about where the firearm had been left.

Although investigators did not recover the firearm, prosecutors proceeded with the case using the available surveillance footage, witness statements and Smith’s statements to detectives.

Ultimately, the jury convicted Smith of second-degree reckless homicide rather than an intentional homicide charge. The conviction reflected a finding that his conduct was criminally reckless and resulted in Azoria’s death, rather than establishing that he deliberately intended to take her life.

For Azoria’s family, the legal distinction does little to lessen the pain of losing a 15-year-old girl.

Her life ended during an ordinary Milwaukee night, leaving behind relatives and loved ones who must now live with a loss that cannot be undone. 💔🕊️

Smith will spend years in prison, followed by extended supervision.

But for Azoria’s family, there is no sentence that can return the daughter they lost or restore the future she should have had.

She was only 15. Her story should have had so much more left to write. 💔
