JACKSON, GEORGIA — Just days before the beginning of his senior year, 18-year-old David Crawford died, leaving his family and community searching for answers about what he may have been experiencing in the weeks and months before his death.

David was preparing to return to Jackson High School for his final year. Instead, his family is now grieving a young man they describe as intelligent, kind, outgoing and deeply committed to his faith.

David was found on Tuesday, August 4, on a walking trail near his home.

According to his family, he had died from a self-inflicted injury involving a firearm.

His death has prompted an investigation, while his relatives have raised concerns that persistent bullying and harᴀssment may have contributed to the emotional pain he was experiencing.

David’s mother, Summer Crawford, has said she believes her son was “bullied to death.”

The family is not presenting that belief as a final determination of what happened. Instead, they are asking investigators to carefully examine the circumstances surrounding David’s death and determine whether bullying, harᴀssment or other factors played a role.

To people who knew David, he often appeared happy.

His family remembers him as intelligent, friendly and outgoing, with a strong connection to his Christian faith.

But his sister, Cheyenne, said David became increasingly isolated following an incident at school the previous year.

According to the family, rumors were allegedly spread about him afterward, and they believe other students began distancing themselves from him without giving him an opportunity to respond.

His mother said she tried to maintain an open relationship with her children and would speak with David whenever she noticed that he seemed troubled.

But David did not always explain what he was experiencing.

At times, she said, he would respond, “I don’t want to talk about it,” or reᴀssure her that everything was fine.

The family now believes they may not have understood the extent of the difficulties David was facing.

After his death, they say students and others began coming forward with information about what he may have experienced.

The family says it has identified people they believe could have information relevant to the investigation.

However, they have strongly emphasized that they do not want anyone targeted.

They are asking supporters not to issue threats, send hateful messages, engage in harᴀssment or participate in online attacks in David’s name.

Cheyenne said the family’s Christian faith has guided their response and that they do not want another tragedy to grow out of David’s death.

Instead, they are asking for a thorough and impartial investigation.

If authorities determine that wrongdoing occurred, the family wants those responsible to face appropriate accountability through the legal system.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is ᴀssisting the Jackson Police Department with the case. According to David’s family, investigators also have access to his phone as they work to establish a clearer timeline and understand the circumstances surrounding his death.

The City of Jackson publicly identified David and expressed condolences to his family, while encouraging members of the community to come together in prayer and support.

For those closest to David, the loss is especially painful because of how close he was to a major milestone.

He was only days away from beginning his senior year.

He should have been thinking about classes, friends, graduation, college and the next chapter of his life.

Instead, his family is left remembering the young man he was and wondering how much pain he may have been carrying without them knowing.

His aunt, Kerrie Monti, has also created a GoFundMe campaign to support the family during this difficult period.

David’s family hopes that by speaking openly about what they believe may have happened, other young people experiencing bullying or isolation will be heard before their pain becomes overwhelming.
