For little Willow Dodding, learning to walk was already an exciting milestone. But at just two years old, her first confident steps with a prosthetic leg became a moment her parents will never forget. 💗

Willow was born with fibular hemimelia, a rare congenital condition in which the fibula bone in the lower leg is partially developed or missing. In her case, the fibula in her right leg was absent, while the tibia and femur were shorter than the bones in her other leg.

Her parents, Charlotte and James Dodding of Blackpool, were first told about the condition during Charlotte’s 20-week pregnancy scan.

“It was quite a shock to hear that news,” Charlotte recalled. “There’s no reason for it—it was simply a random genetic change.”

Despite her condition, Willow reached her developmental milestones and even began crawling and walking earlier than expected. But as she grew, the difference in the length of her legs made walking increasingly difficult.

She developed a noticeable limp and sometimes walked on the inside of her foot. Her knee could also move out of position, making everyday movement more challenging.

Doctors discussed several options with the family, including complex leg-lengthening procedures that could require numerous surgeries.

Ultimately, Charlotte and James decided that a Syme procedure, which removes the front portion of the foot while preserving the heel pad, would give Willow the best chance of moving comfortably with a prosthetic.

The operation was performed at Manchester Children’s Hospital and lasted around two and a half hours.

The decision was understandably difficult for her parents.

“We wanted her to have a normal childhood,” Charlotte explained. “It was a tough decision to choose this surgery, but we knew it was the best option.”

Just four months later, an unforgettable moment arrived.

Willow received a custom-made prosthetic leg from the Preston Specialist Mobility Rehabilitation Centre. Even more special, the prosthetic was decorated with floral fabric from one of her favorite baby tops. 🌷

And Willow didn’t waste any time.

Her parents captured the moment she began taking her first steps with the new limb. Smiling and determined, the little girl confidently moved forward as her family cheered her on.

“She couldn’t wait to get moving again,” Charlotte said. “I remember her trying to crawl the day after her operation.”

Today, Willow is walking confidently and showing her family just how determined she can be.

“She’s so determined and resilient—nothing holds her back,” Charlotte said proudly.

For her parents, Willow’s journey is about much more than learning to walk. They hope sharing her story will help other families understand fibular hemimelia and see that a different beginning does not have to mean a smaller future.
