PENSACOLA, FLORIDA — When 5-year-old Jakaiden Smith was found along the water near Perdido Bay on Feb. 6, 2026, investigators were faced with a heartbreaking question: how did a young autistic, nonverbal child end up there?

Jakaiden’s body was discovered inside a black trash bag near the waterline. He was wearing only a diaper and had reportedly been wrapped in two blankets and a towel.

Investigators described him as extremely emaciated.

The case began several days earlier, when Jakaiden and his mother, Jalynda Karie Smith, were reported missing.

According to court records, Jalynda’s family became concerned after they could not reach her, which they said was unusual.

Her sister later received a message from an unfamiliar number telling her to check her email. According to an arrest report, Jalynda allegedly asked her sister not to tell their mother or police that she had made contact.

She also reportedly asked her sister to download Telegram, saying she needed their conversation to be secure and wanted to make sure she could not be found.

Her sister asked where Jakaiden was.

According to the arrest report, Jalynda allegedly responded, “I came in the house and he was not breathing.”

When her sister went to Jalynda’s apartment, nobody was there. Investigators reportedly found missing bedsheets and noted that the apartment was extremely cold.

The following morning, Jakaiden was discovered near the bay.

An autopsy and subsequent investigation raised serious concerns about his condition.

Jakaiden weighed approximately 20 pounds when he d*ed. Investigators described him as severely malnourished and dehydrated.

That weight became especially significant because Jakaiden had reportedly weighed approximately 30 pounds during a medical appointment on Dec. 15, 2025.

Investigators say that meant he had lost roughly one-third of his body weight in less than two months.

A doctor reportedly told investigators that such a significant loss could be ᴀssociated with starvation or a serious medical condition requiring emergency treatment.

Investigators also reportedly found food inside the apartment.

Initial autopsy information did not identify another obvious traumatic injury, while the arrest documents said the final cause and manner of d*ath were awaiting additional testing.

Authorities then began reconstructing Jalynda’s movements.

Apartment surveillance reportedly showed her vehicle leaving the complex on Feb. 4 and not returning. Her vehicle was later found at a Walmart parking lot in Gulf Breeze.

Surveillance reportedly showed a person matching Jalynda’s appearance leaving the vehicle, entering nearby businesses and eventually leaving the area in a rideshare.

Investigators also reported that Jalynda’s phone and iPad had been factory reset. Her phone was allegedly wiped only two minutes before she was taken into custody.

There had also been previous concerns involving Jakaiden’s care.

In 2022, when he was approximately 18 months old, Jalynda was charged with child neglect after authorities alleged that he had been left alone in the apartment for about two hours. A maintenance worker reportedly found him alone in his crib wearing a soiled diaper.

That charge was later dropped after Jalynda completed a court-recommended parenting program.

In October 2025, another report was reportedly made to Florida’s Department of Children and Families alleging that Jakaiden was being left home alone while his mother worked as a rideshare driver.

According to the arrest report, that investigation was closed after authorities determined that Jakaiden was safe and his needs were being met.

Four months later, he was d*ad.

Jalynda was initially arrested on an aggravated manslaughter charge. The investigation continued, however.

On March 26, 2026, an Escambia County grand jury indicted her on first-degree m*rder and tampering with evidence charges.

She is being held without bond.

The m*rder allegations have not been proven in court, and the defense is enтιтled to challenge the evidence as the case proceeds.

But at the center of the investigation is a little boy who could not speak for himself.

Jakaiden was autistic. He was nonverbal. He depended on the adults around him for food, care, protection and safety.
