The family of 18-year-old Nolan Wells, a promising Mississippi college football player, is continuing to seek answers following his tragic death after a Fourth of July boating trip that has raised numerous unanswered questions.

Nolan disappeared on July 4, 2026, during a recreational outing to Horn Island, a federally protected barrier island off Mississippi’s Gulf Coast. What began as a holiday celebration ended in heartbreak when he failed to return with the group he had traveled with. Two days later, his body was recovered in the waters near the island’s northwest shore.

Although the investigation remains active, many questions surrounding the circumstances of Nolan’s disappearance have yet to be answered, prompting his family to publicly call for greater transparency.

Speaking on CNN’s First of All with Victor Blackwell, Nolan’s father, Elmore Wonsley, expressed his frustration over what he believes are conflicting explanations from those who were with his son that day.

“They have to answer to us,” he said.

He added that if he had brought someone on the trip, he would never have left without making sure everyone returned safely.

According to statements from several of Nolan’s friends, he chose to remain on the island after the group prepared to leave, reportedly to spend time with another group of people. One friend’s mother later said the boat had experienced mechanical problems, leading the group to depart while Nolan arranged another ride back.

Those explanations, however, have done little to ease the family’s concerns.

Among the questions they continue to raise is why Nolan’s cellphone and house keys were left behind on the departing boat. His mother, Christine Wonsley, also said she found it unusual that his phone contained no pH๏τos, videos, or messages documenting what should have been a memorable Independence Day outing.

Additional public attention has centered on a viral video that allegedly shows an argument on Horn Island that same day. Nolan’s family and their attorney believe the recording may capture him asking someone to return his phone.

Authorities have acknowledged they are aware of the video but have not verified its authenticity or confirmed whether it is directly connected to Nolan’s disappearance.

Meanwhile, Nolan’s close friend, Jayvon Williams, has publicly disputed rumors that Nolan was involved in a fight. While acknowledging there had been an unrelated disagreement involving others, he said many aspects of the overall timeline still do not make sense and expressed surprise that investigators had not interviewed him.

Seeking an independent review of the case, Nolan’s family retained civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who has joined Rev. Al Sharpton in calling for a thorough and transparent investigation.

While preliminary findings suggest drowning may have caused Nolan’s death, authorities have not released an official determination regarding the manner of death, and investigators have not ruled out other possibilities.

The family has also arranged for an independent autopsy, with financial ᴀssistance from former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick. Additional support has helped cover funeral expenses as the family continues searching for answers.

“We just want to know what happened and why our baby didn’t come home,” Christine Wonsley said, expressing the heartbreak shared by Nolan’s loved ones.

Investigators continue to examine the evidence, while search-and-rescue volunteer Joshua Gill of the United Cajun Navy has stated that, to his knowledge, none of the friends remained on the island waiting for Nolan after the group departed.
