Jakub Matusiak’s name has become closely ᴀssociated with the A66 tragedy, but behind the headlines was a 23-year-old whose life extended far beyond the circumstances of that night.

Jakub was one of five people travelling in the Volkswagen Pᴀssat when it collided with a marked police vehicle on the A66 near South Bank on August 22. The crash claimed seven lives in total, including PCs Matthew Blades and Tom Clough. Cleveland Police later confirmed Jakub’s idenтιтy alongside those of the four other occupants.

In the days that followed, attention understandably focused on the circumstances surrounding the Pᴀssat and the wider investigation. But for those who knew Jakub, he was not simply a name appearing in police statements or news reports.

On September 4, hundreds of mourners gathered in South Bank for Jakub’s funeral at St John the Evangelist Church. His favorite color, orange, was reportedly worn by mourners as a way of remembering him, while a large procession accompanied his final farewell.

The scale of the funeral showed how strongly Jakub’s death had affected people around him. At the same time, the event took place amid intense public attention surrounding the A66 tragedy and its aftermath, with several local schools closing early because of expected crowds and disruption.

Jakub’s story will inevitably remain connected to one of the most shocking road tragedies in the region. Yet his family’s loss is also deeply personal: before becoming a name ᴀssociated with the A66, he was a young man with his own relationships, memories and life.
