đ„șđ Baby Struggled To Breathe As An 800-Gram Rare Growth Covered His Tiny Face

The first time Braian Demjenski Pereiraâs parents held their newborn son should have been filled with nothing but joy.
Instead, they watched an entire team of doctors fight to save his life.
Braian was born with an 800-gram epignathus, an extremely rare congenital growth that developed across his face. At birth, the máŽss weighed nearly 30% of his total body weight, making it almost impossible for him to breathe on his own.
Epignathus is one of the rarest conditions in the world, affecting approximately one in every one million live births. The growth usually develops during pregnancy, beginning in the roof of the mouth before extending outward across the face. In severe cases, it can grow almost as large as the babyâs head, blocking the mouth and airway before birth.
For Braianâs family, the journey began long before he entered the world.
His parents, Marciliana Demjenski and Valmir Pereira, had spent two years hoping for another child.
Learning they were expecting was one of the happiest moments of their lives.

But during a routine ultrasound at 18 weeks of pregnancy, everything changed.
Doctors discovered the rare growth developing on their unborn sonâs face.
âWe had waited so long for this pregnancy,â Marciliana recalled. âFinding out we were expecting was incredibly emotional. Then, soon afterward, we learned about the growth.â
From that moment forward, every week brought another ultrasound.
Every appointment carried both hope and uncertainty.
âWe lived one week at a time,â Valmir said. âThere was always worry, uncertainty, and hope.â
As the pregnancy progressed, the growth continued to expand.
By 35 weeks, it had grown so large that it completely covered Braianâs mouth, making it clear he would not be able to breathe normally after birth.
Doctors decided an early Cesarean delivery offered him the best chance of survival.
When Braian was born, dozens of medical professionals were already waiting.
Within moments, they performed an emergency tracheostomy, creating a new airway through his neck because it was the only way to get oxygen into his lungs.
The next moments became every parentâs nightmare.
During the first hour and a half after birth, Braianâs heart stopped four separate times.
At one point, he had no heartbeat for 25 minutes.
Doctors administered emergency medications while desperately trying to revive him.
His mother remembers being told that even if he survived, there were serious concerns about possible long-term complications.
Braianâs oxygen levels were critically low, and he received an Apgar score of just 1, far below the healthy range of 8 to 10.
âAs they rushed him to the ICU, I rode in the elevator beside the medical team and watched them trying to save my sonâs life,â his father recalled. âAfter waiting so long for him, I couldnât imagine losing him.â
At the same time, Braianâs mother was fighting her own medical emergency.
She experienced severe complications during childbirth, lost a significant amount of blood, and also required treatment in the intensive care unit.
She wasnât able to see her newborn son until 12 hours after he was born.
Two weeks later, after Braian was breathing independently through his tracheostomy, surgeons successfully removed the máŽssive growth.
The operation marked a major turning point in his journey.
Still, his recovery was far from over.
Braian remained at Hospital Nossa Senhora das Graças for three months, gaining strength, learning to feed, and growing strong enough to finally go home.
Following surgery, doctors closely monitored his neurological development and temporarily prescribed medication to help reduce the risk of seizures while they evaluated whether the difficult birth had affected his brain.
Thankfully, as the months páŽssed, Braian continued making encouraging progress.
He no longer required the medication.
He gained weight steadily.
And he began reaching developmental milestones much like other children his age.
Today, Braian continues regular follow-up appointments with specialists to ensure the rare growth does not return.
He also sees plastic surgeons who will continue reconstructive procedures as he grows.
For his mother, life now revolves around helping her son thrive.
âToday, my life is completely dedicated to my sonâs well-being and all of his medical appointments,â she said.
As Braian approaches his first birthday, every smile, every laugh, and every milestone carries extraordinary meaning.
His story is one of unimaginable challenges, remarkable medical care, and the unwavering love of parents who never stopped believing in their little boy.
Against incredible odds, Braian continues to grow stronger every dayâreminding everyone around him that hope can shine even through lifeâs most difficult beginnings.
