An early-morning drive on Chicago’s South Side turned into a ᴅᴇᴀᴅly shooting Thursday after police say someone inside a white SUV opened fire on another vehicle.

The shooting happened at approximately 3:02 a.m. on August 13, 2026, near 71st Street and Champlain Avenue.

According to Chicago police, three people—a 54-year-old man, a 48-year-old woman and a 45-year-old man—were traveling southbound in a white sedan when another vehicle pulled alongside them.

The other vehicle was described as a white SUV.

Investigators said someone inside the SUV opened fire before the vehicle fled the area.

All three occupants of the sedan were struck. 🚨

The 54-year-old man suffered gunsH๏τ wounds to his head and back.

Emergency responders rushed him to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where doctors attempted to save his life.

He later died from his injuries.

Police had not immediately released his idenтιтy, and additional information about his family or background was not available.

A 48-year-old woman was also wounded.

She suffered an injury to her chest and was transported for medical treatment. Authorities said she was in good condition.

A second man, 45, was struck in the left leg and was also taken to a hospital.

He was likewise reported to be in good condition.

For the two surviving victims, the shooting left them facing injuries and an investigation that could take time to resolve.

For the family of the 54-year-old man, however, the consequences are permanent.
