A new account from Christian Brueckner has brought fresh attention to one of the world’s most closely watched missing-child cases.

Brueckner, the German man identified by authorities as the prime suspect in the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, has spoken publicly for the first time about where he says he was on the night the three-year-old disappeared from Praia da Luz in Portugal in 2007.

According to reports published this week, Brueckner claims he was on a beach approximately 150 yards from the resort where Madeleine was staying.

He says he was there selling drugs and had arrived from Spain. Brueckner also claims that Portuguese police stopped his van three times that evening while officers were searching the area for Madeleine.

He alleges that the vehicle was not searched and that officers allowed him to continue. These are Brueckner’s own claims, and they have not been established as facts by investigators.

A NEW ACCOUNT OF THAT NIGHT

Brueckner’s reported admission is significant because he had not previously publicly described his movements on the night Madeleine disappeared.

Madeleine was just three years old when she vanished from the family’s holiday apartment on May 3, 2007.

Her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, were dining with friends at a nearby restaurant when Madeleine was discovered missing.

Brueckner has now placed himself close to the resort that evening — while insisting that he had nothing to do with Madeleine’s disappearance.

He has also claimed that he previously remained silent because he believed authorities were attempting to frame him in connection with the case.

WHY THE THREE POLICE STOPS ARE DRAWING ATTENTION

The claim that Brueckner encountered police checkpoints three times has naturally attracted attention.

However, there is currently an important distinction between what Brueckner says happened and what investigators have independently established.

His account does not itself prove that police encountered him that night, nor does it establish any connection between his presence near Praia da Luz and Madeleine’s disappearance.

Brueckner remains a suspect in the investigation, but he has never been charged in connection with Madeleine’s disappearance. He continues to deny involvement.

THE INVESTIGATION HAS NEVER CLOSED

British, German and Portuguese authorities have continued examining the case for years.

In June 2025, German and Portuguese investigators conducted fresh searches in the Algarve, including areas near locations ᴀssociated with Brueckner. Police searched abandoned properties and examined a well as part of the operation.

British detectives working under Operation Grange have also continued to pursue potential lines of inquiry.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed in 2025 that Brueckner remained a suspect in its own investigation and said detectives would continue working with authorities in Germany and Portugal.

WHAT ABOUT THE CLAIMS INVOLVING DRUGS?

Brueckner’s latest account includes his own allegation that he was carrying illegal drugs that night.

That claim is part of his version of events, rather than a newly established finding in the Madeleine investigation.

It may provide investigators with another account of his movements to examine, but it does not by itself answer the central question that has remained unanswered for more than 19 years:

MADELEINE’S DISAPPEARANCE REMAINS UNSOLVED

Despite years of searches, investigations and renewed attention surrounding Brueckner, Madeleine’s whereabouts remain unknown.

Her body has never been found, and no one has been charged with her disappearance.

The latest revelations therefore add another layer to the timeline — but they do not provide a definitive resolution.
