The A66 tragedy has brought renewed attention to Grangetown and surrounding areas of Middlesbrough, where residents and local officials have spoken about long-running concerns over crime, intimidation and organised criminal activity.
On August 22, a wrong-way collision on the A66 claimed the lives of two Cleveland Police officers and five young men. Investigators subsequently launched a wider operation into the events leading up to the crash, with police saying some of those involved may have had links to serious organised criminal activity.
Since then, the wider community has faced further unrest and a heavy police presence. Residents have described an atmosphere of fear, while authorities have been investigating a series of incidents amid concerns about possible gang-related conflict. At the same time, many local residents have stressed that the overwhelming majority of people living there are ordinary families who want their community to be safe.
