Daniel Newman was only 13 when his life changed forever.

While other teenagers were beginning to discover independence, make plans for the future and experience the ordinary milestones of adolescence, Daniel was beginning a six-year battle with cancer.

He was diagnosed with medulloblastoma, a cancerous brain tumor, and suddenly his childhood became defined by medical appointments, treatments, scans and uncertainty.

For Daniel and his family, the diagnosis changed everything.

His parents, Danno and Mandy, and his sisters, Addison and Harlee, faced the reality that cancer would become part of their everyday lives. Ordinary moments could suddenly be overshadowed by medical news. Family plans had to accommodate treatments, appointments and the constant uncertainty surrounding Daniel’s health.

But through it all, Daniel kept fighting.

For six years, he faced challenge after challenge.

Then, approximately four years ago, his family faced another devastating development: Daniel had to have his leg amputated.

For a teenager already dealing with brain cancer, losing a limb brought another enormous physical and emotional challenge.

There was rehabilitation to face, a changed relationship with his body and another adjustment to a life that had already become far different from what most teenagers experienced.

Yet those who knew Daniel remember that his circumstances did not define his character.

He continued moving forward with courage and determination.

His family and supporters saw a young man who had every reason to feel overwhelmed, yet continued to demonstrate strength and kindness.

Daniel’s journey was not simply about fighting a disease.

After six years of battling cancer, however, Daniel’s family received the news they had spent years hoping would never come.

At just 19 years old, Daniel pᴀssed away surrounded by his family.

His grandmother, Gale Cᴀssady, shared the heartbreaking announcement approximately an hour after his pᴀssing.

“Our beautiful courageous boy who fought the good fight for 6 years, went to be with Jesus about an hour ago,” she wrote. “He was surrounded by his family. Thank you all for your words of comfort and prayers.”

Those words captured both the depth of the family’s grief and the extraordinary courage they saw in Daniel throughout his illness.

Nineteen is an age when many young people are beginning to imagine adulthood.

College plans may be taking shape. First jobs, friendships, independence and new experiences may be waiting just beyond the horizon.

Daniel’s path was different.
