💙👶 “Ryan the Lion”: Premature Baby Survives 40-Minute Cardiac Arrest After Defying Impossible Odds 👶💙

A premature baby born at just 23 weeks has stunned medical staff and his family after surviving a critical emergency in which his heart reportedly stopped for 40 minutes shortly after birth. Ryan Colquhoun’s story has since become a powerful example of resilience in neonatal intensive care.

Ryan was born at Princess Royal Maternity Hospital in Glasgow, Scotland, weighing just 1lb 7oz (approximately 650 grams). Arriving extremely prematurely, he required immediate life-saving intervention from a specialist medical team due to the severity of his condition.

According to his mother, Claire Nobile, 25, doctors worked continuously to stabilize him after birth. In an effort to preserve his body temperature, staff used emergency neonatal techniques to keep him warm while performing prolonged resuscitation efforts. Despite the extreme circumstances, Ryan eventually showed signs of life after approximately 40 minutes of intensive treatment.

“He never stopped fighting,” Claire said, describing the determination of both her son and the medical team who cared for him. “I call him Ryan the Lion.”

Ryan’s early life in the neonatal intensive care unit was marked by significant medical complications. He suffered a collapsed lung, brain bleed, sepsis, E. coli infection, and dangerously low body temperature. He required four blood transfusions and spent 51 days on a ventilator. He also underwent laser treatment to help prevent potential vision loss, a common risk in extremely premature infants.

Claire’s pregnancy had already been filled with emotional challenges. Early bleeding led her to believe she had miscarried, only to later discover the pregnancy was still progressing. At 23 weeks, her waters unexpectedly broke at home, leading to an emergency delivery situation.

Following birth, Ryan remained critically small and fragile. His mother described how, during the earliest days of his life, she was unable to hold him properly due to his size and medical condition. Despite this, she remained by his side throughout his extended hospital stay.

Over time, Ryan reached important milestones, including wearing his first clothes at 11 weeks old and having his first bath shortly afterward. After 133 days in hospital, he was finally strong enough to return home in June.

However, shortly after discharge, Ryan experienced another life-threatening episode when he stopped breathing during a family gathering. His uncle performed CPR until emergency responders arrived, helping stabilize him once again.

Today, Ryan continues to grow and develop at home under the care of his family. His mother is now fundraising to support the hospital team who played a crucial role in his survival.

“He is proof that even the smallest babies can overcome incredible challenges,” Claire said.
