💙 Born With an Extremely Rare Heart Defect, Baby Jackson Defied Every Expectation ✨
When doctors first discovered a serious problem with their unborn son’s heart, Elyse and Andy Lane were given very few reasons to feel hopeful.

At 20 weeks pregnant, Elyse went in for a routine ultrasound expecting everything to be fine. Instead, doctors discovered that her baby was missing his pulmonary valve and had an unusually enlarged pulmonary artery that was putting dangerous pressure on his developing airways. 💔🏥

A second opinion in Boston brought an even more complicated diagnosis: tetralogy of Fallot, a rare congenital heart defect affecting the flow of blood and oxygen. Jackson was also missing his pulmonary valve, and one of his pulmonary arteries was disconnected.

The outlook was frightening.

But then the family met cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Frank Hanley, who gave them something they desperately needed — hope. 🙏

“He told us, ‘I’ve done this before, and I can do this again,’” Andy later recalled.

The family held onto those words.

When Elyse was 36 weeks pregnant, they traveled to California so Jackson could be born near the hospital where he would receive specialized care. But just two days later, doctors noticed concerning changes in his heart rate and decided they could no longer wait.

Jackson arrived weighing 6 pounds, 5 ounces, nearly four weeks early. He was immediately taken to the NICU in critical condition because he could not breathe on his own. 🥺

Doctors knew surgery could not wait.

At just 5 days old, Jackson underwent an extraordinary 13-hour heart operation. Surgeons implanted a pulmonary valve, reconstructed his pulmonary arteries, and used a highly specialized technique called the LeCompte maneuver to reposition the arteries and relieve pressure on his compressed airways. ❤️‍🩹🏥

The operation gave this tiny baby the chance everyone had been praying for.

And then came another surprise.

Jackson recovered far faster than expected. 🌟

He and his parents were able to leave the hospital shortly after Thanksgiving, when he was just 7 weeks old — nearly four months earlier than doctors had anticipated.

His airways were open, he was breathing normally, and his family finally got to bring their little boy home in time for his first Christmas. 🎄👶💙

“We are so grateful. He’s our Christmas miracle,” Andy said.

Jackson may need additional procedures as he grows, including eventually replacing his heart valve. But after overcoming such an extraordinary beginning, doctors expect him to have the opportunity to live a long, active life. ✨

Born with a heart condition that once left doctors preparing for the unimaginable, Jackson fought his way through one of the hardest battles a newborn could face — and came home as his family’s greatest miracle. 💙🕊️🙏
