💔🚨 Welfare Check Leads to Homicide Investigation as Court Records Point to Alleged Financial Dispute

What began as concern over a missed appointment soon developed into a homicide investigation that has drawn widespread attention in Indiana.

According to investigators, 47-year-old James “Matt” Lushin was found deceased inside his home after authorities conducted a welfare check when he unexpectedly failed to appear for a scheduled commitment. Officers responded to the residence at approximately 7:25 p.m., where they discovered Lushin with multiple gnsht injuries.

The discovery immediately prompted a homicide investigation as detectives began examining both Lushin’s personal and professional life.

Friends and acquaintances knew Lushin as an accomplished international poker player who had traveled to destinations including Amsterdam and Spain to compete in tournaments. However, investigators allege that he was also involved in marijuana distribution.

According to court documents, searches of Lushin’s property uncovered marijuana, multiple cell phones, and nearly $16,000 in cash inside the residence. Investigators also reported finding approximately 11 pounds of marijuana stored inside a safe located in a separate structure on the property.

As detectives reviewed financial records and other evidence, attention turned toward an alleged financial dispute.

On March 30, 2026, Ronald Dewayne Brown Jr., 50, was formally charged with murder in Hamilton Circuit Court.

Court records allege Brown had purchased marijuana from Lushin for more than a year, with documented Cash App payments totaling approximately $17,900 between January 2025 and early March 2026. Investigators further allege that Lushin had supplied Brown with additional marijuana valued between $20,000 and $70,000 that had not yet been paid for. Prosecutors suggest this alleged debt may have been a motive, though that claim has not been proven in court.

As part of the investigation, detectives executed search warrants at three Indianapolis residences connected to Brown. Authorities reported recovering marijuana, electronic devices, and a loaded handgun.

Investigators also stated that the ammunition recovered during the search was consistent with shell casings collected at the crime scene. Prosecutors are expected to rely on this and other evidence as the case moves through the court system.

At this stage, all allegations remain unproven, and Ronald Dewayne Brown Jr. is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue reviewing evidence and working to establish a complete timeline of the events leading to James “Matt” Lushin’s death.
