A Saturday afternoon that began like any other at Great Lakes Crossing Outlets in Auburn Hills ended in heartbreak for one Michigan family after a violent incident inside the mall’s busy food court claimed the life of 20-year-old KeShawn Emery, affectionately known by many as NBA Key.

According to Auburn Hills police, the incident unfolded shortly before 5:30 p.m. while hundreds of shoppers were enjoying the weekend. Emery had reportedly been spending time with his cousin when an earlier dispute resurfaced inside the crowded food court.

Police officers who were already inside the shopping center responded immediately after receiving reports of loud disturbances. Upon arriving, they found Emery unresponsive at the scene. A 19-year-old woman was also injured during the incident and is expected to recover.

Authorities quickly located a 22-year-old Detroit man who remained at the mall following the incident. Police said he cooperated with officers and was taken into custody without further problems. Investigators later stated that the event was not believed to be random.

According to investigators, Emery and the suspect had reportedly been involved in an earlier confrontation inside one of the mall’s restrooms before unexpectedly crossing paths again in the food court. Authorities also confirmed that the suspect claimed he had previously been confronted by Emery and another individual. Detectives continue reviewing evidence, while prosecutors will determine whether formal charges will be filed.

For the Emery family, however, legal proceedings cannot erase the overwhelming grief they now face.

Demond Clayton, who had been eating in the food court, recalled hearing two loud sounds before realizing something was terribly wrong.

Within seconds, people abandoned meals, shopping bags, and personal belongings as they hurried to protect themselves and their families. Clayton said the entire food court emptied in less than 15 seconds, describing the experience as a true “fight-or-flight” moment.

One image has remained with him ever since—a frightened mother accidentally dropping her baby’s bottle while trying to carry her child to safety. Clayton attempted to return the bottle, but the mother was already focused only on escaping the chaos surrounding her.

As investigators continue piecing together the events that led to the tragedy, the Auburn Hills community is left reflecting on how quickly an ordinary afternoon can change forever.
