💔🕊️ Bronx Community Mourns 12-Year-Old Jacob Freytes After Tragic Loss During Ordinary Afternoon

A Bronx family is grieving the loss of 12-year-old Jacob Freytes, a child whose life was cut short during what should have been an ordinary afternoon near his home.

Family members, friends, and neighbors gathered outside Jacob’s apartment building to remember him and support one another through an unimaginable loss.

The courtyard became a place of remembrance, filled with candles, flowers, balloons, stuffed animals, and personal messages honoring a young boy who was deeply loved.

Throughout the day, more people arrived to add tributes, each one representing another person affected by Jacob’s pᴀssing.

Jacob’s mother, Migdalia Martinez, sat nearby as loved ones surrounded her with comfort and support. She accepted condolences from those offering sympathy but said she was not yet ready to speak publicly about her loss.

According to reports, Jacob was injured shortly before 5 p.m. Saturday near Walton Avenue and Elliot Place in the Bronx, close to his home.

Surveillance footage from a nearby store captured the moments leading up to the incident.

The video showed Jacob entering the store and purchasing a ball before stepping outside with plans to ride his bicycle and play.

Moments later, a confrontation began among several individuals nearby.

Authorities say the child was not involved in the situation and was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Jacob was injured during the incident and attempted to get back inside the store for help. Emergency responders arrived, and he was taken to Lincoln Hospital, where doctors were unable to save him.

For his family, the most painful part is knowing Jacob was doing something completely normal for a child his age.

He was riding his bike.

Instead, his loved ones are now left with memories and a memorial honoring the life he should have had the chance to continue living.

Jacob’s father, Jesus Freytes, is a retired NYPD detective sergeant. His former service with the department was confirmed by the Sergeants Benevolent ᴀssociation.

Now, he faces a devastating personal loss involving the very type of community tragedy he spent years working to prevent.
