This pH๏τo captures a moment no mother ever wants to see.

Three-year-old Bentley is crying in pain as he faces another round of a battle he has already spent much of his young life fighting.

Cancer has returned.

His mother, Amanda, once believed they had finally made it through the worst of it. But instead of simply getting to enjoy being a little boy, Bentley is once again facing chemotherapy, hospital stays, medical procedures and the exhaustion that comes with treatment.

For Amanda, watching her son go through it all again is heartbreaking.

And Bentley’s autism adds another difficult layer to an already overwhelming situation.

Amanda says that communication and sensory challenges can make it harder for Bentley to understand what is happening around him and to express exactly what he is feeling. Experiences that may already be frightening for a young child can become even more difficult when he is overwhelmed by unfamiliar environments, procedures and physical discomfort.

So his mother has to do more than simply watch over him.

She has to try to understand his tears, recognize when something is wrong and find ways to comfort him when he cannot easily explain what he needs.

At only 3 years old, Bentley has already had to become familiar with hospitals in a way no child should have to.

But behind every treatment and every difficult day is a little boy who deserves the chance to simply be a kid.

And behind him is a mother who is once again praying that this fight will eventually be over.

For Amanda, this isn’t just another medical update.

It’s her little boy hurting again.
