💔 PART 2: MY HUSBAND SOLD MY HOUSE WHILE I WAS GIVING BIRTH—BUT MY LAWYER’S NEXT WORDS MADE HIM GO PALE
Christopher stared at me, waiting for an explanation.
Brenda stood beside him, her arms folded, wearing the same smug expression she had carried since I walked through the door with our newborn daughter.
“So?” Christopher demanded. “What exactly are you trying to say?”
I gently adjusted Harper in my arms, then placed the two hundred dollars back inside the envelope.
“The house had already been sold before you tried to sell it.”
For several seconds, neither of them spoke.
Then Christopher laughed.
“That’s impossible. I checked the property records myself.”
“You checked them?” I asked calmly. “Or did someone tell you what you wanted to hear?”
His expression changed.
Brenda stepped forward. “Stop playing games, Nora! Christopher is your husband. Whatever belongs to you belongs to him, too.”
I looked at her.
“That’s a lovely opinion. Unfortunately, it isn’t the law.”
Then I took out my phone and called Rachel Cooper, my attorney.
She answered immediately.
“Rachel,” I said, keeping my eyes on Christopher, “they’re here. Can you send the documents we discussed?”
“Already done,” she replied. “Check your email. And Nora, don’t sign anything they give you.”
Christopher’s confidence began to crumble.
“What documents?” he demanded.
I didn’t answer.
Instead, I opened the email Rachel had sent. Attached were copies of the completed sale, the buyer’s ownership documents, and a formal notice explaining that Christopher had never possessed the authority to sell the property.
I turned the screen toward him.
“Read it.”
He snatched the phone.
His eyes moved rapidly across the page. First, he looked confused. Then his face drained of color.
“This is fake.”
“No,” I said. “It’s real.”
Brenda grabbed the phone from him and scanned the documents herself.
“But you were pregnant! You couldn’t have been arranging a sale!”
“I managed to do it while you two were busy planning how to throw me out.”
Christopher threw the phone onto the sofa.
“You tricked me!”
I stared at him in disbelief.
“I tricked you? You waited until I was in the hospital giving birth to our daughter before telling me I had nowhere to live. And somehow, I’m the one who betrayed you?”
He opened his mouth, but nothing came out.
For the first time, Brenda had nothing cruel to say.
But Christopher wasn’t finished.
He stepped closer, lowering his voice.
“Listen carefully. I already have a buyer. I promised him this house, and I’m not going to let you ruin everything. You need to call your lawyer and reverse the sale.”
I almost felt sorry for him.
Almost.
“Christopher, you don’t understand. The house is no longer mine to sell, either. The new owners have paid for it legally.”
“Then give them their money back!”
“With what money?” I asked. “The money from the sale is protected in an account in my name. And you have absolutely no authority over it.”
His jaw тιԍнтened.
Then he made the mistake that changed everything.
“Fine!” he shouted. “If I can’t have the house, I’ll make sure you don’t get a single cent. I’ve already taken care of that.”
I went still.
“What did you just say?”
Brenda suddenly looked at him.
“Christopher, don’t.”
That one sentence told me more than either of them intended.
I slowly lowered myself into a chair, keeping Harper close to my chest.
“Rachel,” I said into the phone, “I think we need to discuss something else.”
My lawyer had remained on the line.
“I heard him,” she replied. “Nora, there’s something you need to know. When I reviewed your financial records this morning, I discovered several transactions you never authorized.”
My stomach тιԍнтened.
“What transactions?”
“Three withdrawals from your personal investment account. Together, they total nearly two hundred thousand dollars.”
I looked at Christopher.
He wouldn’t meet my eyes.
Rachel continued, her voice growing colder.
“And there’s something even more serious. Someone submitted a document claiming you had authorized Christopher to manage those funds while you were in the hospital.”
I could barely breathe.
“I never signed anything like that.”
“I know. That’s why I asked the bank to preserve the records and flag the disputed transactions. We need to determine exactly how the document was submitted.”
Christopher suddenly lunged toward the phone.
“Give me that!”
I pulled it away.
“Don’t touch me!”
Harper began to cry. I immediately turned my attention to my daughter, gently rocking her until her cries softened.
That small sound seemed to break the tension in the room.
Christopher backed away, but his expression had changed. He no longer looked like a man who believed he had won.
He looked like someone realizing that the consequences of his actions were only beginning.
Then Rachel spoke again.
“Nora, there’s one more thing. The document wasn’t submitted using Christopher’s personal account.”
I frowned.
“Whose account was it?”
A pause followed.
Then she gave me a name I never expected to hear.
“Brenda’s.”
My mother-in-law went completely still.
Christopher turned toward her so quickly that even he seemed surprised.
“Mom?”
Brenda’s lips parted, but she said nothing.
I watched them both, my newborn daughter resting peacefully against me, and suddenly understood that this was bigger than a house, money, or even a marriage.
Someone had been preparing for this long before I went into labor.
Rachel’s voice came through the phone once more.
“Nora, I just received a message from the bank’s fraud department. They’ve located the original authorization document.”
“What’s on it?”
“Your signature appears at the bottom.”
I felt a chill run through me.
Because I knew, without a doubt, that I had never signed it.
Then Rachel added five words that made my blood run cold.
“And it was witnessed by Christopher.”
I slowly raised my eyes toward my husband.
He was staring at me, his face pale.
For seven years, I had believed I knew the man I married.
Now I wondered how much of my marriage had been a lie.
And as Christopher reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone, I saw a message flash across his screen from an unknown number:
“She knows about the document. Get rid of the original before she finds out what it really proves.”
I read it before he could turn the screen away.
Then I whispered, “Christopher… what exactly did you sign?”
He didn’t answer.
Instead, he looked at his mother.
And for the first time, Brenda looked genuinely afraid.
Because the original document wasn’t just about my money.
It contained a second name—someone neither of them had ever expected me to discover.
And when Rachel finally revealed whose name it was, the secret behind my husband’s betrayal would become far more dangerous than either of us had imagined…
