👁️💗 A DROOPING EYE REVEALED A RARE CANCER — LITTLE MARY KATE’S COURAGE LEFT A LASTING LEGACY ✨

What first appeared to be a small change in a baby girl’s eye became the beginning of a heartbreaking medical journey.

On January 18, while Mary Kate’s family was attending her brother’s basketball game, her aunt noticed something unusual.

“Mary Kate’s eye is drooping a little. Do you see that?” 🥺

Mary Kate had been born three weeks early and was otherwise a healthy, happy little girl. Her parents initially thought she might simply be tired. But when the drooping didn’t improve, they took her to the emergency room. 🏥

Weeks of appointments and examinations followed.

Then her symptoms suddenly became worse. Mary Kate could barely open one eye, prompting doctors to perform an MRI. At first, there was hope that the mᴀss might be a benign tumor.

But a second scan brought devastating news.

The tumor had grown, with signs of involvement along her spine. Mary Kate was diagnosed with atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumor (ATRT), a rare and aggressive cancer affecting the brain and spinal cord. 💔🧠

Her treatment began immediately.

She underwent three brain surgeries, 86 chemotherapy infusions, 25 sedations and 50 blood transfusions, spending 107 nights in the hospital. She also received high-dose chemotherapy and stem-cell transplants at UCSF. 🏥🙏

And through it all, Mary Kate continued to smile.

Between treatments, she reached precious childhood milestones — including taking her first steps, a moment her family will never forget. 👣🥹💕

But despite every treatment available, the cancer continued to progress. Later scans showed that the disease had spread further, and doctors explored clinical trials and other options.

Then came the moment no parent wants to face.

After a prolonged seizure and further progression of the cancer, Mary Kate’s family learned that their time together was becoming very short.

On November 22, she pᴀssed away peacefully, just four days before her second birthday. 🕊️💔

Her life was heartbreakingly brief, but her impact did not end there.

Her family created MK’s Tiny Toys, with 20% of every purchase supporting the Mary Kate Funk Foundation, which provides financial and emotional support to families facing childhood cancer. 💗🌈

Today, Mary Kate’s family continues to share her story — not only to honor their little girl, but also to remind other families facing childhood cancer that they are not alone.

Mary Kate taught those who knew her to treasure the simplest things:

Every smile. Every hug. Every precious moment together. 🥹💕

She may have had only a short time in this world, but the love she left behind continues to reach other families.

Little Mary Kate’s life was far too short — but her courage, her smile and her legacy will never be forgotten. 🕊️💗✨
