A proud mother has shared the heartwarming moment her one-year-old daughter took her very first steps with a new prosthetic limb, just four months after undergoing a life-changing surgery. 🥹💗

Charlotte and James Dodding, from Blackpool, faced a difficult decision when their daughter, Willow, was diagnosed with fibular hemimelia, a rare condition affecting the development of the fibula bone in the lower leg.

The condition is estimated to affect around one in 40,000 births and can cause the fibula to develop only partially or not at all. In Willow’s case, the bones in her right leg were shorter than those in her left, resulting in a significant difference in leg length. 🦵❤️‍🩹

Doctors first discovered the condition during Charlotte’s routine 20-week pregnancy scan. The news came as a shock to the family, who had no explanation for why it had happened.

“We were told there was no reason for it — it was simply a random genetic change,” Charlotte recalled.

Willow was born at Blackpool Victoria Hospital weighing 5lb 13oz. Doctors confirmed that although she had her tibia and femur, both bones in her right leg were shorter than those on her left side.

Despite the challenges she faced, Willow continued reaching her developmental milestones and even surprised her parents by crawling and walking earlier than expected. 🌟👶

As she became more mobile, however, the difference in her leg lengths began affecting the way she walked. She developed a noticeable limp and had difficulty moving comfortably.

For a while, Willow used an orthotic and knee brace to provide additional support. Doctors eventually recommended a Syme procedure, which would allow her to use a prosthetic more comfortably and give her greater freedom of movement.

“It was a really difficult decision,” Charlotte explained. “We looked at leg lengthening, but that would have meant lots of operations, and we wanted her to have as normal a childhood as possible.”

Surgeons at Manchester Children’s Hospital successfully completed the procedure in around two and a half hours, preserving the heel pad so Willow could eventually use a prosthetic limb. ❤️‍🩹🏥

Just four months later, Willow reached a milestone her parents will never forget.

She received a custom-made prosthetic from Preston Specialist Mobility Rehabilitation Centre, decorated with floral fabric taken from one of her favorite tops from when she was a baby. 🌸🦿💕

In May, the determined toddler began confidently walking with her new prosthetic, much to the delight of her parents.

Charlotte remembered how eager Willow was to get moving again, even attempting to crawl the day after her surgery.

“She couldn’t wait to get moving again,” she said. “She’s so comfortable with the prosthetic.”

For Charlotte and James, the moment represented far more than a first step. It was a powerful reminder of their daughter’s determination and resilience.

“Our goal is to raise awareness of fibular hemimelia and support other families,” Charlotte said.

“She’s doing so well, and we’re really thankful for the amazing prosthetic.”

The family hopes Willow’s journey will encourage other parents facing similar decisions and remind them that a difficult beginning does not have to limit a child’s future. 🌈💖
