The legal proceedings surrounding Ohio’s shocking “House of Horrors” child endangerment case have taken another significant turn after a judge approved a psychiatric competency evaluation for the father accused in the investigation.

According to court records, Gary Siders II (also known as Gary Siders Jr.), 36, will undergo a formal mental competency evaluation to determine whether he is legally fit to stand trial.

His attorney, Lee Roberts Jr., filed the request in late July, arguing that concerns about Siders’ current mental condition warranted a professional ᴀssessment. The motion also asked the court to seal supporting documents, stating they contain highly sensitive information regarding his mental health.

On July 29, 2026, Judge Laina Fetheroff Rogers approved the request, ordering the Southeast Ohio Regional Jail to arrange a psychiatric evaluation within the next 30 days. ⚖️

The same ruling also granted a competency evaluation for Christina Siders, 66, Gary’s mother.

Her attorney similarly argued there is reason to question whether she fully understands the charges against her or is able to meaningfully ᴀssist in her own legal defense.

With the latest ruling, Gary Siders II and Christina Siders become the second and third members of the family to undergo competency evaluations.

Earlier, Gary Siders Sr., 73, had already been ordered to receive a similar evaluation after suffering a serious medical emergency shortly after his arrest. He was later released from custody due to ongoing health concerns.

The case first drew national attention on June 30, 2026, when authorities entered the family’s rural home in the village of Hamden, about 80 miles southeast of Columbus.

Inside, investigators discovered 16 children, ranging in age from 1 to 18 years old.

According to authorities, many of the children had allegedly been confined for extended periods inside a single 12-by-12-foot room, and several reportedly could not speak.

Officials also said seven children required immediate medical treatment, with two transported by air ambulance to trauma centers in Columbus. 💔

Each faces 16 counts of child endangerment, with one charge corresponding to each child discovered in the home.

Because of the intense public attention surrounding the case, Judge Fetheroff Rogers issued a gag order in mid-July covering Gary Siders II’s proceedings.

The order prohibits attorneys and law enforcement officials involved in the case from making public statements, citing concerns that extensive media coverage could influence potential jurors and affect the fairness of future court proceedings.

As of July 30, 2026, the newly approved competency evaluations are expected to move forward.

The examinations will determine whether Gary Siders II and Christina Siders understand the nature of the criminal charges against them and whether they are capable of participating in their own defense.

Meanwhile, Elizabeth Siders remains in custody facing the same 16 child endangerment charges, while legal proceedings involving Gary Siders Sr. continue separately because of his medical and mental health concerns.

The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have indicated that additional charges may still be filed as investigators continue reviewing evidence.
