After a lifetime filled with surgeries and medical challenges, Janearae Ryder has reached a moment her family once could only dream of: she has received a heart transplant.

Janearae was born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, or HLHS, a serious congenital heart condition in which the left side of the heart does not develop normally. From infancy, her life depended on complex medical treatment. She has already survived five open-heart surgeries, making her journey one of extraordinary strength and perseverance.

Now, at 19 years old, Janearae is beginning a completely new chapter.

Her mother, Loretta, shared an encouraging update from the ICU after speaking with Janearae’s surgeon. Doctors performed an echocardiogram and told the family that the transplanted heart “looks good.”

For Loretta, those words brought enormous relief.

“This mama is so happy,” she said, while acknowledging that her daughter still has a long road ahead. She also expressed graтιтude for the countless people who have continued praying for Janearae.

But despite the encouraging news, doctors are not ready to declare the danger over.

Medical teams are closely monitoring several arterial vessels because of the possibility of bleeding. According to Loretta, Janearae’s surgeon told the family that the next 12 hours are especially important. If no bleeding occurs during that period, doctors do not expect it to become a continuing concern.

For now, Janearae will remain sedated.

If everything continues moving in the right direction, doctors may attempt to remove her breathing tube tomorrow. That step brings another important challenge because Janearae’s diaphragm was injured during her first open-heart surgery when she was a baby.

Her surgeon is hoping that her diaphragm will function well enough when doctors begin waking her and helping her sit in a chair.

Every milestone will matter.

And while Janearae’s family celebrates the gift of a new heart, Loretta is making sure another family is not forgotten.

“Please do not forget to keep the donor’s family in your prayers as well,” she said.

Somewhere, another family is grieving an unimaginable loss. Their decision to say yes to organ donation gave Janearae something precious: more time.

Because of that selfless choice, a young woman who was born with HLHS now has a donor heart beating inside her chest.

The next several hours will be filled with careful monitoring, hope and prayer.
