When a devastating earthquake struck Syria in 2023, seven-year-old Mariam found herself trapped beneath the rubble with her little brother, Ilaaf

When the earthquake struck, Mariam was only seven years old.
In a matter of seconds, her world collapsed around her.
On February 6, 2023, a devastating 7.8-magnitude earthquake tore through parts of Turkey and Syria, reducing entire neighborhoods to rubble and trapping thousands of people beneath collapsed buildings. In the small Syrian town of Besnaya-Bseineh, near Harem, one family was caught in the disaster when their home suddenly gave way.

Beneath the concrete and dust were two children: Mariam and her younger brother, Ilaaf.
The darkness was complete. Heavy debris surrounded them. There was no way out and no way of knowing when help might arrive. Yet amid the fear and confusion, Mariam focused on only one thing—protecting her little brother.
As pieces of rubble pressed down around them, she placed her hand over Ilaaf’s head and kept him close, trying to shield him from any further harm. While adults across the region were desperately searching for loved ones, a seven-year-old girl was doing everything she could to comfort and protect her brother.
Above them, rescue workers worked carefully through the wreckage. They eventually made contact with the children and realized they were still alive. Knowing that panic could make the situation even more difficult, one rescuer began speaking gently to Mariam, asking her simple questions about her brother, his favorite toys, and the things they liked to do together.
The conversation helped keep her calm.
Hour by hour, rescuers removed the debris piece by piece, knowing that one wrong movement could put the children in greater danger. Then came the moment everyone had been hoping for.
Both Mariam and Ilaaf were pulled from the rubble alive.
The image of Mariam protecting her brother quickly spread around the world after it was shared online by UN representative Mohamad Safa. For many people, it became one of the defining stories of the disaster—not because it erased the tragedy, but because it revealed something powerful in the middle of it.
Courage does not always come from the strongest people.
Sometimes it comes from a frightened little girl trapped beneath a collapsed building, using her own hand as a shield for the person she loves most.
In a disaster that took so much, Mariam reminded the world of something that survives even the darkest moments:
Love often shows itself through the simplest acts of protection.
