UA Student and Father of Three Found ᴅᴇᴀᴅ During Welfare Check in Brookwood; Suspect Faces Capital Murder Charges

A quiet Tuscaloosa County community is mourning the tragic deaths of two individuals after a welfare check at a Brookwood home led to the discovery of a double homicide.

Authorities identified the victims as 22-year-old Jazmine Alexis Bates, a student at the University of Alabama, and 31-year-old Jose Felix Alvarez-Duenas, a devoted single father of three. Investigators said Alvarez-Duenas had been caring for the homeowner’s pets while they were away. The homeowner’s dog was also found ᴅᴇᴀᴅ at the scene.

Law enforcement responded to the residence on July 6, 2026, after concerns were raised about the occupants’ well-being. Inside, officers discovered both victims deceased. The investigation quickly developed into a homicide case.

Authorities later arrested 24-year-old De’Kendrick Crawford, a former co-worker of the victims. According to investigators, Crawford was located after a standoff in Northport, where officers found him hiding in an attic. He has since been charged with capital murder.

Officials also confirmed that Crawford had an outstanding warrant connected to a previous shooting incident near the University of Alabama campus. At this time, investigators have not publicly identified a motive, and the investigation remains ongoing as detectives continue gathering evidence.

The deaths of Bates and Alvarez-Duenas have deeply affected family members, friends, classmates, and the broader community.

Jazmine Bates is being remembered as a young woman whose life and future were cut tragically short while pursuing her education. Meanwhile, loved ones describe Jose Felix Alvarez-Duenas as a caring father whose greatest priority was his three children.

The loss has resonated throughout Tuscaloosa County, where many have expressed grief over the violence and extended condolences to everyone affected.

As the legal process moves forward, authorities continue to ask anyone with information relevant to the investigation to cooperate with law enforcement.

While many questions remain unanswered, the focus for those who knew the victims has been on honoring their lives and supporting their families through an unimaginable loss.

Our thoughts remain with the loved ones of Jazmine Alexis Bates and Jose Felix Alvarez-Duenas, especially Jose’s children, as they navigate the difficult days ahead. May their memories continue to be cherished, and may those grieving find comfort and strength as the case proceeds through the justice system.
