UA Student and Father of Three Found ᴅᴇᴀᴅ During Welfare Check in Brookwood; Suspect Faces Capital Murder Charges

A quiet Tuscaloosa County community is mourning the tragic deaths of two individuals after a welfare check at a Brookwood home led to the discovery of a double homicide.

Authorities identified the victims as 22-year-old Jazmine Alexis Bates, a student at the University of Alabama, and 31-year-old Jose Felix Alvarez-Duenas, a devoted single father of three. Investigators said Alvarez-Duenas had been caring for the homeowner’s pets while they were away. The homeowner’s dog was also found ᴅᴇᴀᴅ at the scene.

Law enforcement responded to the residence on July 6, 2026, after concerns were raised about the occupants’ well-being. Inside, officers discovered both victims deceased. The investigation quickly developed into a homicide case.
