Authorities in South Bend, Indiana, have charged an 18-year-old man with murder following a fatal shooting that occurred during a Facebook Marketplace transaction.

Investigators say what began as a routine exchange for the sale of a watch turned into a violent encounter that claimed the life of 40-year-old Jean Gragg, a mother who reportedly stepped in to protect her son.

The incident took place on Wednesday evening along MacArthur Avenue, where Jean Gragg and her son were meeting a buyer who had arranged to purchase a watch through Facebook Marketplace.

According to police, the buyer, identified as 18-year-old John Harrison Ford, allegedly attempted to take the watch by force instead of completing the transaction.

Authorities say the situation escalated when Ford reportedly displayed a firearm, turning what was expected to be a simple exchange into an attempted robbery.

When Jean Gragg realized her son was being threatened, she immediately intervened. Investigators say she placed herself between her son and the suspect, pushing him away from the porch in an effort to protect her family.

Police said the suspect initially moved away from the property, but the confrontation did not end there. He allegedly returned moments later, and gunfire erupted outside the home.
