Paula Hudgell’s Courageous Battle: “Some Days Feel Impossible…”

Paula Hudgell’s Heartbreaking New Fight: Adoptive Mum of Tony Hudgell Battles Returning Stage 4 Cancer After Brutal Surgeries

Paula Hudgell OBE, the devoted adoptive mother of Tony Hudgell who has inspired the entire nation, has shared an emotional and raw update about her ongoing battle with stage 4 bowel cancer. The 58-year-old, widely admired for rescuing and adopting Tony after he suffered horrific abuse as a baby, revealed that she has now begun her 17th round of chemotherapy.

Just eight weeks after undergoing two major life-saving operations — a HIPEC procedure and a complex lung resection — Paula received devastating news. Recent scans showed three new aggressive tumours had appeared on both of her lungs, forcing her back into intensive treatment far sooner than expected.

In a deeply honest social media post, Paula wrote: “This may be my last update…” as she opened up about the extremely tough recovery and the heavy emotional toll of her situation. She admitted it was difficult to describe how overwhelming it felt after a full year of treatment and two major surgeries.

“I truly believed I might have a little more time to breathe, to recover, to feel like myself again,” she shared. Instead, the family’s hopes for a period of peace were shattered by the return of the disease.

Despite the brutal side effects of chemotherapy and the immense physical and emotional strain, Paula’s fighting spirit remains strong. She emphasised that she refuses to give up, stating: “Even in the hardest moments, there is a part of me that still hopes, still believes, still fights — because life is worth fighting for.”

Paula and her family are no strangers to adversity. She was instrumental in campaigning for “Tony’s Law,” which increased the maximum sentence for child abusers in the UK to life imprisonment. Tony, despite losing both his legs due to abuse, has gone on to become an incredible inspiration, raising millions for the Evelina London Children’s Hospital.

Paula made it clear she is sharing her journey not for sympathy, but for honesty and transparency with the public who has supported her family for years.

As she faces this latest challenging chapter, the courageous mother continues to draw strength from her husband, her son Tony, and the many well-wishers standing by her side.
