PART 4: SHE WENT TO MEET BIANCA IN SECRET—BUT THE MAN WAITING FOR HER REVEALED THE ONE TRUTH ADRIAN ROMANO HAD BURIED FOR EIGHT YEARS… 💔
At 11:57 a.m., I stood outside a small café on the north side of Chicago, staring at the message Bianca had sent me.
Come alone. If you want to know the truth about your husband, you need to hear it from someone who knew him before you did.
My attorney had begged me not to come.
I had promised her I wouldn’t do anything reckless.
Technically, I hadn’t promised to stay home.
I had arranged for a trusted driver to wait nearby, shared my location with my attorney, and kept my phone in my coat pocket.
I wasn’t going to let fear make my decisions.
But as I stepped inside the café, I immediately knew something was wrong.
Bianca wasn’t there.
Instead, a gray-haired man sat alone at a table near the window. His hands were folded over a leather folder, and his expression changed the moment he saw me.
“Mrs. Romano?”
I stopped.
“Who are you?”
“My name is Daniel Hayes.”
The former security chief.
The man from the pH๏τograph.
I took a step backward.
“Where’s Bianca?”
“She won’t be coming.”
“Then this conversation is over.”
“Please,” he said urgently. “You deserve to know what happened eight years ago. And why Adrian has spent so long making sure you never discovered it.”
I froze.
Eight years.
The exact length of my marriage.
Daniel opened the folder and slid a pH๏τograph across the table.
It showed a much younger Adrian standing outside a hospital, his face bruised, one arm wrapped around the shoulders of an elderly woman.
I recognized her immediately.
Adrian’s mother.
She had died two years before I married him.
“What does this have to do with me?” I asked.
Daniel looked at me for a long moment.
“Everything.”
Then he told me a story that changed the way I remembered my entire marriage.
Eight years earlier, before Adrian became the undisputed head of the Romano organization, his family had been fighting a dangerous internal power struggle.
Someone close to his father had been selling information to a rival group.
Routes, meetings, private addresses.
Even the locations where Adrian’s family members could be found.
One night, the betrayal resulted in an attack that nearly killed Adrian’s mother.
Adrian survived.
His mother did not.
Before she died, however, she had made him promise one thing.
Daniel reached into the folder and produced a letter.
The handwriting was delicate, the ink faded.
“His mother wrote this for him,” Daniel explained. “She knew the family was falling apart. She wanted Adrian to find someone who would love him for who he was, not for his name or his money.”
I stared at the letter.
“Why are you telling me this?”
“Because your name was mentioned in it.”
My heart skipped.
“What?”
Daniel turned the page.
There, halfway down the letter, was my name.
Elena.
My maiden name.
I had met Adrian at a charity event eight years earlier, long before I knew anything about his family’s business. He had been distant, suspicious, and almost painfully formal.
I’d thought he simply didn’t know how to talk to people.
Now Daniel was telling me that my name had appeared in a letter written before Adrian and I had even met.
“How is that possible?”
“His mother knew your family,” Daniel replied. “She had once received help from your father when she was younger. She never forgot it.”
My father had died when I was nineteen. He rarely spoke about his past, and I’d never heard him mention Adrian’s family.
Daniel continued.
“Before she died, Adrian’s mother asked him to find your family and repay a debt of graтιтude. But Adrian did something unexpected.”
“What?”
“He fell in love with you.”
I looked away.
For one terrible second, I wanted to believe that explained everything.
The distant husband.
The missed anniversaries.
The years of loneliness.
Perhaps there had once been something real beneath all that silence.
But Daniel wasn’t finished.
“Adrian never told you about the letter because he didn’t want you to believe he married you out of obligation.”
I swallowed hard.
“Then why did he treat me like I was invisible?”
Daniel’s expression darkened.
“Because somewhere along the way, he became convinced that keeping you outside his world was the only way to keep you safe.”
I shook my head.
“That’s not protection. That’s a decision he made without me.”
For the first time, Daniel looked ashamed.
“You’re right.”
Then he placed another pH๏τograph on the table.
This one was recent.
It showed Bianca leaving Adrian’s private office with a document tucked beneath her arm.
Daniel pointed to the document.
“That’s what this is really about.”
“What is it?”
“A financial agreement that gives Bianca access to a company Adrian secretly established several years ago.”
I stared at him.
“Why would he give her that?”
“He didn’t.”
Daniel took a breath.
“Someone forged his authorization. And the money that disappeared from that company was transferred through accounts connected to people who wanted to take control of the Romano organization.”
My blood ran cold.
“Are you saying Bianca stole from him?”
“I’m saying she’s involved in something much bigger than an affair.”
I thought about the pH๏τograph.
The message.
She knows about the baby. Eliminate the risk.
“Who wrote that note?”
Daniel’s face went pale.
“I don’t know. But I recognized the handwriting.”
“Whose?”
Before he could answer, his phone vibrated.
He glanced at the screen.
Whatever he saw made him stand abruptly.
“We need to leave. Now.”
“What? Why?”
“Because I was supposed to meet you here without Adrian finding out. And someone just sent me a message saying your husband is already on his way.”
I stared at him.
“How would Adrian know I’m here?”
Daniel didn’t answer.
He simply grabbed the folder.
Then the café door opened.
Adrian Romano walked in.
His eyes found me immediately.
For a moment, nobody moved.
He looked at Daniel.
Then at the pH๏τographs.
Then at me.
“Elena,” he said quietly. “You shouldn’t be here.”
I stood up.
“You don’t get to decide where I go anymore.”
His jaw тιԍнтened.
“I know.”
Those two words surprised me more than any threat could have.
He looked exhausted. His usual confidence had been replaced by something raw and uncertain.
“I came because Bianca disappeared this morning,” he said. “Her apartment was empty. Her phones were destroyed. And someone broke into my office last night.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“Adrian, she knows about the company.”
Adrian’s face changed.
“Tell me you didn’t show her the documents.”
“I showed her enough.”
For a moment, I thought Adrian would explode.
Instead, he closed his eyes briefly.
When he opened them, he looked directly at me.
“There is something I need to tell you.”
“Another secret?”
“Yes.”
His answer was immediate.
No excuse.
No attempt to pretend otherwise.
“I’ve spent eight years believing I could keep you safe by keeping you away from the truth. I was wrong.”
I folded my arms.
“You don’t get to confess your mistakes and expect me to forgive you.”
“I’m not asking you to forgive me.”
“Then what are you asking?”
He looked at my stomach.
“To let me protect our child while we find out who is threatening you.”
I felt anger rise in my chest.
“Our child doesn’t need a powerful man making decisions for everyone. Our child needs a father who tells the truth.”
Adrian lowered his eyes.
“You’re right.”
I had imagined hearing those words for years.
Now that they had finally come, they didn’t repair anything.
They only made me wonder why it had taken so much pain for him to say them.
Then Daniel interrupted.
“There’s one more thing you both need to know.”
He opened the folder to the final page.
It contained a copy of an old document bearing Adrian’s father’s signature.
At the bottom was a name I had never expected to see.
Bianca DeLuca.
But beneath it was another signature.
One that made Adrian’s face turn completely white.
His father’s.
Daniel spoke in a barely audible voice.
“Bianca didn’t enter your marriage by accident, Adrian. Her family has been connected to yours for decades.”
Adrian stared at the document.
“That isn’t possible.”
“Your father made an agreement before he died. An agreement that was supposed to unite the two families.”
I looked between them.
“What agreement?”
Neither man answered immediately.
Then Adrian finally spoke.
“My father promised Bianca’s family that she would become my wife.”
The room seemed to tilt around me.
“And you married me instead?”
Adrian looked at me.
“Yes.”
“Did Bianca know?”
“Yes.”
A bitter laugh escaped my lips.
“So she spent months trying to take my place because she believed I stole something that belonged to her?”
“It’s more complicated than that,” Adrian said.
“Of course it is.”
I picked up my purse.
“I am tired of being the last person to learn the truth about my own life.”
Adrian stepped aside, allowing me a clear path to the door.
He didn’t try to stop me.
But just as I pᴀssed him, he spoke again.
“Elena, wait.”
I turned.
His voice was barely above a whisper.
“There’s a reason my father wanted Bianca to marry me. And if the document Daniel found is authentic, then your baby may be the only person who can prevent what happens next.”
My hand instinctively moved to my stomach.
“What does my baby have to do with your family’s agreement?”
Adrian looked at Daniel.
Daniel slowly shook his head.
“Tell her,” he said.
Adrian took a long breath.
Then he revealed the truth that made the last eight years of my marriage seem like the smallest part of the story.
“My father didn’t leave me the entire Romano empire,” he said. “A portion of it was placed in a trust, with one condition.”
He looked directly at me.
“If I ever had a legitimate heir, control of that trust would pᴀss to my child.”
I stared at him.
“And Bianca?”
“She believes that if our child is born, her family will lose everything they were promised.”
Suddenly, the threatening messages made sense.
The surveillance.
The forged documents.
The strange warning about eliminating the risk.
This was no longer about a mistress wanting a married man.
It was about money, power, and a child who hadn’t even been born.
Then Adrian’s phone rang.
He answered immediately.
“What?”
A voice on the other end spoke so quickly I could barely make out the words.
Adrian’s expression turned cold.
“Where?”
He listened for three seconds.
Then he looked at me.
And I knew, before he spoke, that something terrible had happened.
“Daniel,” he said quietly, “they found Bianca.”
Daniel went pale.
“Where?”
Adrian lowered the phone.
“At my father’s old estate.”
He paused.
“She’s alive. But she left something behind.”
“What?” I asked.
Adrian looked at me with an expression I had never seen before.
Fear.
“An envelope addressed to you.”
My heart began to pound.
“What’s inside?”
He hesitated.
Then he answered.
“Your father’s death certificate.”
I couldn’t breathe.
My father had died when I was nineteen.
I’d always believed his death was the result of a sudden medical emergency. There had been no investigation, no suspicious circumstances, nothing that made me question what my family had told me.
But Adrian was staring at me as though the ground beneath both of us had just disappeared.
“There’s something else,” he whispered.
I gripped the back of a chair.
“What?”
Adrian swallowed.
“Your father didn’t die before we met.”
The room fell silent.
“He was alive the night I proposed to you.”
And suddenly, I understood that the biggest secret in my marriage might not have belonged to Adrian at all.
It might have belonged to my own family.
