PART 2: THE SECRET HIS BEST FRIEND COULDN’T KEEP 💔
“Lauren, you need to listen to me carefully,” Ryan whispered through his tears. “Evan is at the hospital.”
For a moment, I couldn’t speak.
“What happened to my husband?”
“He’s alive,” Ryan answered quickly. “But Lauren… there’s something you need to know before you come here.”
My fingers тιԍнтened around the phone.
“Just tell me where he is.”
Ryan gave me the hospital’s name, then fell silent again.
“And Lauren?”
“What?”
“He wasn’t alone tonight.”
The words hit harder than they should have.
I had spent two weeks preparing myself to live without Evan. I had imagined finding an apartment, starting over, and eventually learning how to breathe without feeling the weight of our failed marriage.
But I had never imagined this.
“Who was he with?” I asked.
Ryan exhaled shakily.
“Please come to the hospital. I can’t explain this over the phone.”
The call ended.
I sat on the edge of the bed, staring at the screen. Evan’s pillow still carried the faint scent of his cologne. His wedding ring sat in the little wooden dish beside his watch, where he always left it before going to sleep.
I looked at it for a long time.
Then I got dressed.
For the first time in our marriage, I drove somewhere in the middle of the night without telling Evan where I was going.
And for the first time, I wasn’t afraid of what he might think.
The emergency department was bright, cold, and almost deserted when I arrived.
Ryan stood near the elevators, his shirt wrinkled and his eyes red. The moment he saw me, he looked away.
“Where is he?”
“Room 312. The doctors say he’ll recover.”
“Then why are you crying?”
Ryan swallowed.
“Because I should have told you the truth a long time ago.”
Before I could respond, he led me down the corridor.
Through the half-open door, I saw Evan sitting upright in a hospital bed. A bandage covered his forehead, and his right arm was wrapped in a sling.
He looked exhausted.
But he was alive.
When he saw me, relief crossed his face.
“Lauren.”
I stopped in the doorway.
He reached toward me with his uninjured hand.
“Thank God you came.”
I didn’t move.
“What happened?”
He glanced at Ryan, who stood behind me.
“Car accident,” Evan muttered. “It was raining. I lost control.”
“Ryan said you weren’t alone.”
Evan’s expression changed.
Only for a second, but I saw it.
“Lauren, I can explain.”
“Then explain.”
He opened his mouth, but no words came out.
Ryan stepped forward.
“She was in the pᴀssenger seat.”
“Who?” I asked, even though something inside me already knew.
Evan closed his eyes.
“Madison,” he whispered.
Madison.
The woman from his office whose name appeared on his phone far too often. The woman he insisted was just a friend. The woman whose birthday dinner he had attended three months earlier, claiming it was a work event.
I stared at my husband.
“Were you cheating on me?”
“No,” he answered too quickly. “It wasn’t like that.”
Ryan let out a bitter laugh.
“Stop lying, Evan.”
“Shut up!”
“Tell her what you told us tonight!” Ryan shouted. “Tell her why you were driving around at four in the morning!”
Evan went pale.
I had never seen Ryan speak to him that way.
“What is he talking about?” I asked.
Ryan looked directly at me.
“Evan was planning to leave you. He told us he was going to ask Madison to move in with him.”
The room seemed to tilt.
Evan shook his head desperately.
“That was before. I was confused. I never actually—”
“And there’s something else,” Ryan interrupted.
He reached into his jacket and pulled out a small black phone.
“I found this in Evan’s car after the accident. It kept ringing, and when I checked the screen, I saw a message that changed everything.”
He held the phone out to me.
“I think you deserve to read it.”
Evan suddenly struggled to sit up.
“Ryan, don’t!”
But Ryan had already unlocked the screen.
One message was open.
It had been sent at 3:41 a.m., just minutes before the crash.
I read it once.
Then again.
My hands began to tremble.
Because the message wasn’t from Madison.
It was from someone Evan had trusted for years.
Someone who had sat at our dinner table, laughed in our living room, and repeatedly told me that I wasn’t good enough for my own husband.
I slowly lifted my eyes toward Evan.
He looked terrified.
“Lauren,” he whispered, “please. Whatever you do, don’t call that number.”
I stared at the screen.
Then I realized something even more disturbing.
The message wasn’t about ending our marriage. It was about a secret Evan had kept from me for seven years.
And the sender had just written five words that made my entire world collapse:
“She knows who your father is.”
I looked at Evan.
For the first time that night, he wasn’t afraid of losing his wife.
He was afraid I was finally about to discover who he really was.
