PART 2 — THE BLOODLINE RANSOM… AND THE GALLOWS CONTRACT AT ASHFORD RIDGE!

PART 2 — THE BLOODLINE RANSOM… AND THE GALLOWS CONTRACT AT ASHFORD RIDGE! 😱🔥
The grandfather clock in the foyer ticked like the strike of a hammer.
Nathaniel couldn’t move. His gray eyes darted from the silver locket in his hand to the lined, exhausted face of the woman standing before him. The delicate cheekbones, the almond-shaped hazel eyes, the small crescent scar near her temple from a riding spill thirty years ago—it was Catherine.
“An empty coffin…?” Nathaniel’s voice cracked, sounding like dry timber breaking under ice. “I dug that grave into the frozen ground with my bare hands, Catherine! I poured my life’s blood into the soil mourning you and our boy!”
“You buried stones, Nathaniel,” Catherine wept, her trembling fingers clutching her black lace shawl. “Fifteen years ago, when the fever swept the territory, you rode three days through the blizzard to Helena for medicine. The night after you left, armed men broke into this house. They told me you had frozen to death in the pᴀss, and they gave me an impossible choice: let them take Benjamin and stage our deaths, or watch them burn our son alive in his cradle.”
Sarah stood frozen by the sofa, her arms locked тιԍнтly around Grace and Oliver. Her mind spun violently. “Catherine… Benjamin never spoke of this. He grew up believing he was an orphan taken in by a blacksmith in Billings!”
“Because I begged the blacksmith to swear an oath to his grave!” Catherine cried out, turning toward Sarah with tears cutting tracks through the dust on her cheeks. “I lived in hiding for fifteen years, working as a laundress in Bozeman just so I could watch my boy grow from afar without putting a target on his back! But six months ago, Benjamin stumbled upon his true birth certificate in the county courthouse while trying to file a homestead claim. He realized who his father was. And the moment he tried to ride to Ashford Ridge to find Nathaniel…”
Catherine choked on a sob, extending the crumpled, bloodstained parchment in her hand.
“…they ran his wagon off Devil’s Canyon.”
Nathaniel snatched the letter. The blood had dried into a dark crust across the official territory seal. But what turned his skin to ash was the signature boldly penned at the bottom of the execution order:
Authorized by Richard Voss — Territory Land Commissioner.
“Voss…” Nathaniel snarled, the name tearing from his throat in pure venom. “The merchant from the street today.”
“He isn’t just a merchant, Nathaniel!” Catherine whispered frantically, clutching his arm with desperate strength. “Voss bought out the territory judges years ago. Under the Montana homestead act, if your direct line of succession was wiped out, your four thousand acres of prime river land would default to the commissioner’s land trust. Voss spent fifteen years waiting for you to die childless! When he saw you bring Sarah and the children here today, he knew the locket would expose everything!”
Suddenly, the night shattered.
CRASH!
A lead slug smashed through the parlor window, showering the braided rug in jagged glᴀss. Little Oliver screamed, burying his face in his mother’s skirt as Sarah threw herself over both children on the floorboards.
“GET DOWN!” Nathaniel roared.
He moved with the brutal instincts that had made him feared across the territory. With one sweep of his arm, he shoved Catherine behind the mᴀssive stone hearth, threw his lever-action Winchester onto the table, and racked the bolt with a deafening metallic CLACK.
Outside, torches flared through the dark timberline, casting dancing orange shadows against the ranch walls. The ground vibrated under the heavy stomp of at least a dozen horses.
A shrill, arrogant voice echoed across the front yard—amplified by the crisp mountain air.
“NATHANIEL ASHFORD! COME OUT TO THE PORCH!”
Richard Voss sat atop an enormous gray stallion, flanked by ten heavily armed men in long dusters, their rifles leveled at the front door. Voss was no longer wearing his nervous merchant’s smile. His eyes were cold, hollow, and vicious.
Nathaniel kicked open the heavy front door, stepping onto the covered porch. His tall, broad frame stood immovable against the biting wind, his rifle leveled ᴅᴇᴀᴅ-center at Voss’s chest.
“You’re standing on Ashford ground, Voss,” Nathaniel said, his voice dropping into a ᴅᴇᴀᴅly, gravel-low register. “And you’re thirty seconds away from answering for my son’s blood.”
Voss threw his head back and laughed—a harsh, mocking sound that echoed into the hills.
“I won’t have to answer for a damn thing, old man!” Voss sneered, pulling a thick roll of legal parchment bound in red ribbon from his coat. “The county sheriff is three miles out with a federal warrant! You’ve been harboring a fugitive woman and her unregistered dependents who owe eight thousand dollars in legal liens to my firm! Sign this quitclaim deed surrendering the northern river acreage, and I might let the widow and the brats leave the territory on foot.”
“You killed my boy,” Nathaniel growled, his finger тιԍнтening against the trigger. “You won’t leave this valley alive.”
“Look behind you before you pull that trigger, Wolf!” Voss barked with a venomous grin.
Nathaniel’s eyes flicked past the porch railing toward the bunkhouse.
The door hung off its hinges. Tied to the corral posts, bloodied and disarmed, were his three most trusted ranch hands. Standing over them were two gunmen holding jars of kerosene.
And stepping out from the shadows of the carriage house was a woman wrapped in a white fur cloak, holding a cocked derringer.
Sarah gasped from the parlor doorway, her face draining of every drop of color.
“Mother…?” Sarah whispered, her voice trembling in utter horror.
The woman in the white cloak smiled—a cold, heartless smirk that made little Grace burst into tears.
“Forgive me, Sarah darling,” the woman said, her voice smooth as silk. “Did you really think your husband’s accident was bad luck? Richard Voss offered me twenty thousand dollars to ensure Benjamin never reached this ranch… and to ensure you brought those children straight into his trap!”
