Dr. Michael Zollicoffer, known lovingly as “Dr. Z,” spent nearly 40 years caring for one of Baltimore’s poorest communities

He never turned patients away. Some paid later, some paid what they could, and many couldn’t pay at all. To Dr. Z, it didn’t matter. They were his people, and he was there to help.
But after being diagnosed with two forms of cancer, he discovered his health insurance was no longer active, leaving him with huge medical bills while fighting for his life.
Then the same community he had carried for decades stepped in to carry him.
