A newborn baby girl buried beneath the soil of a rubber plantation in Vietnam was miraculously rescued after workers heard weak cries coming from the darkness late at night.

The heartbreaking discovery happened on December 8 in Ia Mo, a border commune in Gia Lai Province, Vietnam. According to local authorities, the infant was found partially buried underground, still attached to her umbilical cord, and suffering from severe hypothermia after being left outside in the cold for hours.

The baby survived only because a group of workers decided to investigate strange sounds coming from behind their camp.

Workers Hear Weak Crying in the Middle of the Night

Rơ Lan Bik, a 22-year-old rubber plantation worker, said he was staying with several other workers near the plantation when he suddenly heard unusual noises outside their temporary shelter.

At first, the sounds were so faint that he almost ignored them.

But something about the weak crying felt wrong.

Curious and concerned, Bik and another worker grabbed flashlights and walked toward the source of the sound, about 50 meters behind the camp.

When they arrived, they noticed a dog repeatedly scratching at the ground.

Moments later, the beam from the flashlight revealed something horrifying.

A tiny arm was moving beneath the dirt.

“We were completely shocked,” Bik later recalled. “When we dug further, we saw the baby’s face under the soil. Her skin looked pale and cold.”

Baby Girl Found Buried Alive Under Soil

The workers immediately began digging with their bare hands to rescue the newborn.

According to Bik, the infant was still alive when they pulled her from the ground, but her breathing was extremely weak and her body felt freezing cold.

The baby was rushed back to the workers’ shelter, where they carefully cleaned dirt from her body and tried to warm her while waiting for emergency responders.

“She was still conscious, but barely breathing,” Bik said. “If we had found her even a little later, she probably would not have survived.”

The infant still had her umbilical cord attached, suggesting she had been abandoned shortly after birth.

Emergency Rescue Through the Night

After receiving the report, local police officers and medical workers quickly traveled to the plantation area to ᴀssist the newborn.

Authorities later transported the baby more than 100 kilometers overnight to Gia Lai Children’s Hospital for emergency treatment.

Doctors said the infant arrived suffering from hypothermia caused by prolonged exposure to cold temperatures.

The baby also had scratches on her face and red marks on her hands and feet, possibly caused by insects.

Fortunately, medical examinations showed no serious internal injuries.

Doctors immediately placed the newborn on oxygen support, administered fluids and antibiotics, and carefully monitored her condition.

Doctors Say the Baby Narrowly Escaped Death

Dr. Nguyen Thuy Dien from Gia Lai Children’s Hospital explained that newborn babies are extremely vulnerable to cold weather and infection, especially within the first hours after birth.

“Newborns lose body heat very quickly,” the doctor said. “Without immediate medical care, hypothermia can lead to respiratory failure and become life-threatening.”

Thankfully, the baby was discovered just in time.

Hospital staff later confirmed that her condition had stabilized and that she was responding well to treatment.

The story quickly spread across Vietnam, leaving many people emotional and heartbroken over what the infant endured during her first hours of life.

The workers who rescued the baby said they were overwhelmed with emotion after learning she survived.

Many admitted they could not sleep after the rescue because they kept thinking about how close the infant came to dying alone beneath the ground.

Several workers have reportedly contacted local authorities asking about the possibility of adopting the baby girl if no family members are found.
