A mother and her boyfriend have been jailed for life after being found guilty of murdering her two-year-old daughter in a case that the court described as involving a prolonged campaign of cruelty.

Isabelle Welsh was a happy and healthy child living with her mother, Alexandra Walker, in Thornaby, Stockton-on-Tees. That changed in June 2025 when Walker began a relationship with Harrison Simpson. Within weeks the toddler’s life deteriorated sharply. On 13 September 2025 she suffered catastrophic head injuries at the family home and later died.

At Teesside Crown Court both Walker, then 26, and Simpson, then 22, were convicted of murder and child cruelty. Simpson received a further conviction relating to offences against the child. The judge imposed life sentences, with Simpson ordered to serve a minimum of 28 years and six months and Walker a minimum of 22 years. Ms Justice Norton ruled that the pair were equally and jointly responsible for Isabelle’s death and for the sustained mistreatment she had endured.

The court heard that the fatal injuries occurred on the morning of 13 September. Isabelle either struck her head against a hard surface after being violently shaken, or was swung or flung by the legs into a wall or piece of furniture. She sustained a fractured skull and an unsurvivable brain injury. Her condition deteriorated immediately and obviously.

Walker did not call emergency services for several hours. During that time, according to the judge, she moved the injured child, cleared away evidence of the couple’s cannabis use, and went outside to smoke. The judge told Walker she believed the delay occurred because Walker ᴀssumed the child was already ᴅᴇᴀᴅ and was focused on protecting herself rather than seeking help.

Ms Justice Norton described a “wall of silence, lies and obfuscation” surrounding the final weeks of Isabelle’s life. She characterised Walker as a fantasist and attention-seeker who had lied repeatedly from the outset. Simpson offered no account of what had happened. The judge noted that Isabelle had been properly cared for before Simpson entered the household, but that the situation changed dramatically soon afterwards. The fatal ᴀssault marked the culmination of a series of earlier injuries that the couple had concealed.

Medical staff who had previously raised safeguarding concerns were overruled after accepting Walker’s false explanations. The judge said those earlier interventions might have saved Isabelle’s life.

Speaking outside court, Detective Chief Inspector Steve Chatterton of Cleveland Police said Isabelle was a defenceless child whose life had been cruelly taken. She had deserved a future filled with love, safety and happiness and must never be forgotten. He added that the prolonged suffering she experienced had deeply affected those investigating the case.

The sentencing brings to a close a trial that examined how a previously thriving toddler came to suffer fatal injuries at the hands of the two adults responsible for her care. Both defendants remain in custody serving their life terms.
